Tom Selleck ‘Encouraged’ His Daughter’s Career Path — Inside The Evolution Of Their Relationship

Tom Selleck has been a beloved face in Hollywood for decades. Others go into related industries such as management or production. With his breakout role being that of a private investigator on "Magnum P.I.," it's no surprise that Selleck has had continued success in such roles. 

The actor currently plays New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in the series "Blue Bloods," which is now in its twelfth season. Aside from acting, Selleck is a California Army National Guard veteran and co-founder of the Character Counts! organization. 

Selleck even appeared in Pepsi-Cola commercials before he really got started being a successful actor in television series and movies. In the mid-90s, Selleck was on the hit show "Friends" as Monica's older boyfriend. Although he only appeared in a few episodes throughout the show, his role won him an Emmy nomination in 2000 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

In terms of his personal life, Selleck has been married twice. His first wife was model Jacqueline Ray, and their relationship lasted slightly less than a decade, despite them having a son together named Kevin. In 1987 — five years after his split with Ray — Selleck married Jillie Joan Mack, and in 1988 they had their only daughter, Hannah Selleck. 

Many children of Hollywood celebrities follow in their parents' footsteps and become professional actors. Occasionally, a celebrity's child, such as Hannah Selleck, chooses an entirely unrelated career. Instead of acting, Hannah has chosen a much different life path.

While Tom captured the audience's hearts through the big screen, he had captured the heart of his wife, Jillie, and started a family. Tom wanted to keep his personal life out of the spotlight and even put his career on pause to focus on fatherhood.

Tom worked hard pursuing his passion for acting and raised his daughter with similar values. His daughter, Hannah, discovered her own passion for horseback riding when she was just a child and has managed to make it a long-lasting career.

Much like her father, Hannah grew up loving nature and the outdoors. Luckily, she was raised on the family ranch in California, where she had plenty of space to play and explore outside. Hannah began riding horses at 4-years-old and began competing ten years later.

Hannah went to Loyola Marymount University and successfully earned her degree, landing herself a career in public relations. She quickly got a job at a P.R. firm in Beverly Hills but missed riding horses. Hannah ended up ultimately quitting her job to focus on her real passion in life: horseback riding.

Hannah has most certainly proved herself as an equestrian. She qualified for the Grand Prix level of competition and has won several international medals. Some of her accomplishments include finishing in the top five in Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix.

Even an injury couldn't stop Hannah from pursuing her passion. She embraced her love of horseback riding to sustain a career and care for her favorite animals. Her father had one request, though, before she was able to fully move forward with her career.

When she started out as an adult, Hannah didn't intend to make riding her career. She said to Equestrian Magazine in 2021, "My parents were generous enough to support the riding and keep my good horses while I was in school, but the idea was that I was going to school to prepare for a career that could then support my riding."

Hannah explained how her parents encouraged her to follow her passion. Since her passion is horses, and she grew up riding, it wasn't hard for her to make the commitment. "Once I finished university (at Loyola Marymount) and decided I wanted to pursue my passion," Hannah explained, "my father said he would help support me, but that I had to turn professional, letting go of my amateur status, and work for top professionals in the sport in order to learn my craft."

Tom and Jillie supported their daughter but were not controlling. "Because (my parents are) both artists, they believe in the idea that you have to be very passionate about what you do to be successful. They encouraged me to be passionate about it and immersed in it, and from there it was kind of on me how much I wanted it. They always let me take the lead," Hannah said.

While most people hope to make their hobby their full-time job, Hannah has had a hard time taking a step away from work. She currently runs Descanso Farm, a boutique horse-breeding operation near her family's ranch. She uses her free time to continue training horses on the farm.
