Rita Wilson is of Greek descent through her mother, Dorothea Tzigkou, and her late father, Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff, was born in Greece but was of Bulgarian descent. The actress found more information regarding her ancestry in 2012.
Her husband Tom Hanks recently became an honorary citizen of Greece, which he celebrated at the start of the new year.
“Starting 2020 as an Honorary citizen of all of Greece! Kronia pola! ( more or less, “happy year!”). Hanx,” he tweeted in January.

According to CNN, their citizenship has also been extended to the rest of their immediate family.
Hanks and Wilson were granted honorary citizenship following their humanitarian action in response to the 2018 fires in areas close to the capital, Athens. The couple is not one to shy away from expressing their love and admiration for the Mediterranean country.
"I've been Hellenic now for the better part of 32 years," Hanks said at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards in February of this year.
"Greece is a haven... I've been around the world, I've been to the most beautiful places in the world, none of them tops Greece."
