Tom Cruise’s Daughter Suri Legally Drops Famous Father’s Last Name As She Steps Into Her Own Identity

Suri Cruise is officially leaving her famous father’s surname behind.

The 20-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has legally dropped “Cruise” from her name and is now known as Suri Noelle.

Born on April 18, 2006, in Santa Monica, California, Suri quickly gained media attention for her famous parents and stylish wardrobe. As a child, she was often seen in high-end designer clothing and accessories. It was reported that at age 6, Suri had amassed a wardrobe valued at $3 million. Growing up in the limelight, Suri was privy to a life of luxury and travel, accompanying her parents on the red carpet and visiting numerous countries, including Japan, Italy and Australia.

TMZ reported that Tom was ordered to pay $400,000 a year in child support – $33,33.33 a month – until Suri turns 18. This totals $4.8 million overall. However, Holmes received nothing in spousal support.

Away from the headlines surrounding her parents, Suri appears increasingly focused on creating a future of her own. She is currently studying musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama and has already developed an impressive résumé of stage performances.

Her interest in acting became apparent during her time at New York City’s LaGuardia High School, where she played Morticia Addams in “The Addams Family: A New Musical.” An audience member described her performance as “amazing” to Page Six, while her program biography highlighted her teachers, castmates and crew without mentioning her celebrity parents.

Now, Suri is taking her passion for theater to another level. She is preparing to appear in “Midsummer!,” a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” alongside fellow Carnegie Mellon students. The production is scheduled to play in Pittsburgh on July 31 and Aug 1, 2026, before heading to Britain for the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.

She also portrayed Angel in a staged reading of Cosmic Microwave Background at Pittsburgh’s New Hazlett Theater.

Suri has largely been raised by Holmes since the actress and Cruise divorced in 2012, when their daughter was just 6 years old. The former couple has maintained a famously private dynamic surrounding their daughter, while reports have described Suri and Cruise as estranged for many years.

Suri’s name change appeared to mark another significant step for the young actress as she establishes an identity separate from her famous parents.

According to PEOPLE, Suri registered to vote in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in October 2024, during her freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University, using the name Suri Noelle. Pennsylvania officials have confirmed that voters must register using their legal names, supporting reports that the change is more than simply a professional name.

The new surname also carries a deeply personal connection. “Noelle” is the middle name of her mother, Katie Holmes, whose birth name is Kate Noelle Holmes. Suri had already begun using the name publicly before the legal change became known, including in the program for her June 2024 high school graduation.

At the time, a source told Page Six that using her mother’s middle name was a way for Suri to praise Holmes, while also allowing her to avoid unwanted attention and establish her own identity as she prepared to leave New York for college.

As Suri continues pursuing acting on her own terms, her decision to become Suri Noelle feels particularly fitting. Rather than relying on the enormous Hollywood name she was born with, she appears determined to carve out a place for herself — with her mother’s name close by and her own ambitions firmly in view.
