According to the Guardian, the sequel has been in the works for nearly a decade. Cast members have been hyping up the film’s use of new technology that has never been seen before on screen. Hamm said in an interview with Collider, “They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen,” he said. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

Cruise revealed to Access Hollywood “We’re going to have big, fast machines. It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one … but a progression for Maverick.” The “Risky Business” actor also debuted the trailer at Comic-Con in San Diego, California saying, “I’ve traveled around the world for many many years and people always ask ‘Why don’t you do another one? When are you gonna do another one?’ And for 34 years you guys have been very, very patient with me. And I felt that it was my responsibility to really deliver for you.”

Fans on Twitter couldn’t contain their excitement one saying “I haven't been excited about a movie in at least a decade. I just wish we didn't have to wait a year for this.” While another chimed in “One of my favorite films of all time... Can't wait for this to come out…”

The film is set to hit theatres Summer 2020.
