Toddlers' Mom Dies In Crash, Then They Survive Days Of "Pure Hell" In Ravine

Following a horrific car crash in Arkansas that killed their mother, two toddlers survived for days on their own. Authorities said the fact that they were found alive was a miracle.

According to police records, their 25-year-old mother lost control of the vehicle. Because it went to the bottom of a ravine, it was not spotted from the road. The mother was ejected from the car.

Officials say they are not certain when exactly the accident happened. Although they originally believed it happened on Aug. 18, they discovered it may have occurred on Aug. 16. If that was the case, the children would have been on their own for about four days.

The 1-year-old child remained strapped in the car. His 3-year-old brother managed to walk up to the highway where he was found on Aug. 20. Officials searching the surrounding area then found the car, his brother and their mother.

Although no food or water was found near the crash site, the children were able to survive for two to four days. Officials say the car would not have been found and the children would not have lived if the 3-year-old had not saved both their lives by walking up to the highway. Both children were taken to a local hospital, and the 1-year-old was treated for dehydration.

Rescuers say that more than anything, the 3-year-old was desperate for human contact. He had a few cuts but no other injuries. However, Ouachita County Sheriff's Detective Nathan Greeley said the child wanted to hug him without letting go.
