Parents often try to save money so that they can pay bills on time or get ahead on the bills that they have. Children are mischievous and tend to discover almost every little thing in sight. When you combine the two, you get a toddler who shredded roughly $1,000 that his parents had saved in an envelope in Holladay, Utah, back in 2018.
After Ben Belnap's parents gave him and his wife season tickets to go see their favorite football team, Ben wanted to save as much money as possible to pay them back. They started putting money in an envelope to save over the course of a few months. Soon, they had the money needed to pay Ben's parents back.
Ben and Jackee started looking for the envelope one day so that they could take it to pay for the tickets, but the envelope with over $1,000 was missing. They started looking in every drawer and area in the home that they could think of, not realizing that their toddler had the money the entire time.
Jackee happened to look inside the paper shredder and saw shades of green.
Sure enough, the money had been shredded to bits. Leo, the sly 2-year-old, had taken the envelope and put the contents through the shredder. Ben and Jackee were saddened by what their son had done to the money that they had saved. They were also surprised by how their son could have found the envelope in the first place as it was hidden.

It’s not every day you find out that your toddler accidentally shredded over $1,000, but unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to Ben and Jackee back in 2018. The parents said they had kept $1,060 in an envelope that was supposed to go toward Ben’s payments. But when that envelope went missing, the parents understandably began freaking out.
They searched high and low until Jackee thought of checking somewhere they hadn’t yet looked.
“I’m digging through the trash and she hollers and says, ‘I found it,’” Ben told KSL. “She’s holding the shredder and she says, ‘I think the money is in here.’”
Sure enough, their adorable 2-year-old son Leo had some play time with the shredder, as KSL reported that he is quite fond of the machine and familiar with using it.
“Leo helps me shred junk mail and just things with our name on it, or important documents we want to get rid of,” Jackee explained. It turned out that Leo had put the envelope through the shredder during a time his parents hadn’t noticed.
“We just, for like five minutes, we just shuffled through it, not talking,” Jackee said. “We didn’t know what to do and then I broke the silence and I’m like, ‘Well, this will make a great wedding story one day.’”
Fortunately, a government office in their area dealt with mutilated money, and Ben and Jackee were able to find a solution to their problem. Ben explained:
“I called the guy the next morning and he said, ‘Oh, we might be able to help you here,’ and I was shocked. He said, ‘Bag it up in little Ziploc bags, mail it to D.C., and in one to two years, you’ll get your money back.’”
