Not all heroes wear costumes, they say. A young girl who attends pre-school fitted herself into the shoes of a savior after her parents died in their home in Chatsworth, California. She protected her infant brother for over three days despite all the uncertainty.

Reports from KTTV suggest that on April 18, the young girl’s father, David Kooros, aged 46, shot his wife Mihoko Koike, aged 38. Mihoko died instantly from the gunshot and Kooros took his own life shortly after.

The couple’s children stayed indoors with their parents’ corpses for over three days. Luckily, they survived through the nightmare. The little girl, assumed to be the firstborn, was estimated to be around three or four years old at most, with her infant brother being around two to three months old.

As delicate as they both were, the little girl fended for her infant sibling until they were discovered.

The Police Captain from Los Angeles, Maureen Ryan, confirmed the reports and expressed her utmost admiration of the little girl:

“Our little angel was able to keep herself and her brother alive,” she said at a press conference. “The baby is a miracle baby. And the little girl is a hero. She’s an absolute hero.”

Due to the girl's young age, she couldn’t walk herself out and head to the police station to report the case or call anyone for help. Instead, she concentrated all her energy on one thing, and one thing only: survival.

The two children's grandfather got worried after many failed attempts to reach the family. He reported the case but the police didn’t find anything unusual during their welfare check. The children’s grandfather wouldn't give up though and sought to solve the mystery himself. With a key and a handful of neighbors, he went to the family’s house and discovered the children's parents upstairs, dead.

They found the young girl distraught and with a blank stare on her face, but luckily she was alive. She told her saviors that her parents were upstairs and "hurt".

“She heard her mom crying,” neighbor Tony Medina told CBS Los Angeles. “And then what really was kind of heart-wrenching was when she said she saw ‘mommy was broken'."

Good Samaritans took the girl and her brother and volunteered to feed them as they waited for the police to arrive.

The kids are now safe and in custody as they await the next steps. Police have said that they are healthy and doing well. Investigations about their parents are still ongoing.

At her tender young age, this young girl has displayed an amount of courage and confidence that many people don't possess in their adult state. If you feel touched by her story, let other people derive inspiration by telling your friends and family.
