Tired Of Your Flowers Dying So Fast? These 7 Tips Will Make Them Last Longer

Sep 04, 2018 by apost team

Flowers are absolutely gorgeous in any setting. When you place them in a room, the entire space suddenly seems brighter and happier. Naturally, you want to make your lovely flowers last as long as possible. With a few simple tips, you can keep your flowers looking fresh for longer.

1. Cool Them Off

You do not have to see your flowers all the time. When you are asleep or gone for the weekend, no one is home to see the beauty of your fresh flowers. One way to make your flowers last longer is to refrigerate them overnight. Florists always use refrigerated cases for the same reason. During the day, you can have your flowers out. At night, keep them cold and fresh.

2. Hairspray

Hairspray is great for making your hair stay in place, and it will do the same thing for your flowers. A simple spritz of hairspray will actually help your flowers last longer.

3. Cut Stems The Right Way

When you cut the stems, your goal is to use a 45-degree angle. This helps to increase the surface area so that your flowers can absorb more water. Make sure your cut is about an inch from the bottom.

4. Open Up Any Closed Buds

If you want to make your flower buds open up, place them in a cup of warm water for just a minute. Next, place your flowers in a vase filled with cold water for an additional 20 minutes. By the time the 20 minutes are up, the closed buds will be open.

5. Try Vinegar

This is a wonderful secret to beautiful flowers. When you fill the vase with water, blend in 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. This will make your plants last longer. All you have to do is make sure that you change the water every two or three days.

6. Vodka Always Works

Vodka is not just for drinking. A little sugar and a few drops of vodka can actually keep your flowers from wilting. If the flowers are already wilting, add an entire shot of vodka to the water. This will keep the flowers going for at least another day.

7. Add A Penny

A simple penny can increase the longevity of the flowers. You have to make sure that the penny was made before 1982 because they stopped using as much copper in pennies at that point. The copper in the penny works to increase the acidity so that bacteria and fungus cannot grow.

Arrange Your Flowers The Right Way

Now that you know how to make your flowers last longer, you also need to know how to make them look amazing in a vase. The following tips are great ideas for arranging cut flowers.

1. Use A Grid

If the flowers keep drooping, make a grid with water-resistant tape. Use a clear tape so that no one can see that the tape is actually keeping the flowers in place.

2. Use The Greens

The best way to begin arranging the flowers is by using the green plants first. Full flowers should be at an angle because they use up so much room. Then, medium flowers can be used to fill up the rest of the space. The smallest flowers can be used as accents to the rest of the arrangement.

3. Color Block

For a chic look, group the different flowers according to their color.

4. Play Dress Up

You can also beautify your arrangement by wrapping the vase in lace, twine or ribbon.

5. Recycle Your Flowers

When your flowers start to wilt, you can still save them. Cut the stems shorter and put them in a beautiful mug or tea cup instead of a flower vase.

6. Try Natural Vases

Natural vases like apples, pumpkins or gourds are a beautiful way to display your flowers.
