"Time in a Bottle" hit #1 for 14 weeks after Jim Croce died in an airplane crash. Croce and five others were on their way to a college venue only 70 miles away. The plane crashed while taking off. There weren't any survivors. Of those on board, Maury Muehleisen was included.

He played on one of Croce's albums as the guitarist. Terry Cashman, the producer of Croce, said that when Maury and Jim became friends, Jim started writing unbelievable songs. Maury also started creating unique and well played guitar parts. He stated they were like a full orchestra with only just the two of them.

"Time in a Bottle" hit in the Top 40 on the week ending December 1st, 1973. This was on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It finally reached the #1 spot on the week ending December 29th. This was about three months after Croce died.

Jim Croce wrote this song a day before he learned of his wife's pregnancy. They had only been married a little over five years. Ingrid, his wife, had went to a fertility specialist. This is where and when she found out about the pregnancy. She remembers that Jim was scared and happy all at the same time. Her son was named Adrian. This little boy grew up to follow in his father's footsteps and become a songwriter also.

You can see in the lyrics below just how much this made an impact on his life.

Time in a Bottle

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save every day
'Til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the one I want to go
Through time with
