Tim McGraw Marks 30 Years With Faith Hill By Looking Back At Their Intimate Wedding

For Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, a backyard wedding in Louisiana became the beginning of one of country music’s best-known marriages. The singers married on Oct. 6, 1996, at the home of McGraw’s aunt in Rayville, Louisiana, surrounded by family and close friends. Three decades later, McGraw marked their 30th wedding anniversary with a tribute celebrating the relationship they built together.

McGraw and Hill’s story began before their 1996 wedding. They first met at a Country Radio Seminar event in Nashville in 1994. Their relationship developed two years later, when Hill joined McGraw’s Spontaneous Combustion tour. Both had been in other relationships when they initially crossed paths, but they became a couple after those relationships ended.

Their engagement also became part of country-music lore. McGraw has said he proposed on June 26, 1996, in a dressing-room trailer before performing at a festival. Hill did not give him an immediate verbal answer. When he returned after his show, he found that she had written “Yes” on a mirror and left lipstick kisses around the message. McGraw later said he kept the mirror.

The pair married a little more than three months later and went on to balance two major music careers with raising their family. Their partnership also became important during a difficult period in McGraw’s life.

In a 2021 Esquire interview, McGraw spoke candidly about his decision to stop drinking in 2008. He recalled reaching a point when he was drinking early in the morning before waking his children. He then went to Hill and told her what was happening.

“I went straight to my wife and said, ‘This is where I’m at.’ I was scared,” McGraw recalled. “She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life.”

In an Instagram post, McGraw shared photos and video clips from across their years as a couple, setting the montage to “My Best Friend,” his 1999 single from “A Place in the Sun.” His message returned to the moment Hill approached him at their wedding with her father, Ted Perry.

“30 years, today. 30 years of our marriage,” McGraw wrote. Remembering Hill walking toward him, he described being “bound to the most beautiful soul.”

His tribute focused not only on romance but also on Hill’s place at the center of their family. McGraw praised her ability “to love, forgive, nurture and be full of joy and laughter” and called her the “center of gravity” of his life and their daughters’ lives.

McGraw and Hill share three daughters: Gracie, born in May 1997; Maggie, born in August 1998; and Audrey, born in December 2001. Audrey responded to her father’s anniversary message with a simple expression of affection: “Awwww ❤️ love y’all so much.”

For McGraw, the milestone was an opportunity to look both backward and forward. “Many more sunrises and sunsets. Many more beautiful memories to come,” he wrote, before adding:

“I am a fortunate man.”

McGraw has repeatedly described Hill as both his partner and closest friend. In his anniversary tribute, he called her his “best friend,” “lover,” and “shelter in any and every storm.”

Their marriage has unfolded in public through hit records, joint tours, award-show appearances and family milestones. Yet McGraw’s tribute centered on something more private: gratitude for the woman he married under a tree in Louisiana and for the life they created together.
