Tim Conway Proves Laughter Is The Right Medicine

Tim Conway has been a comedic legend for years. With his down-home charm and low-key wit, he excels at playing both the straight man and the comedy king. His expression alone can reduce an audience to hysterical laughter. This 1975 clip of him on The Carol Burnett Show performing "The Oldest Man: The Doctor" skit proves just how valuable laughter is to our lives.

He first became famous on The Carol Burnett Show. Whenever he teamed up with the amazing Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett, everyone knew a good time as afoot.

During his time on the iconic show, Conway developed a number of memorable characters. One of the most famous was "The Oldest Man." The Oldest Man showed up in a number of skits, always bringing a slow, shuffling fuddy-duddy reaction to the craziest of situations.

His comedic skills are in full force in this video, in which he proves to everyone that laughter is the best medicine for anything that ails you. Korman plays a man who is not feeling well, back in the days when doctors made house calls.

In this case, the Oldest Man is the doctor, arriving in his slow style to try to diagnose what ails Korman.

Conway has a gift for making even the simplest actions funny. The delightful doctor doesn't lift his feet and gets himself into a tangle with a throw rug that twists around his ankles. He can't seem to master the art of lifting up his feet.

Even actions like drying his hands, polishing his glasses, and shining his shoes reduce the audience to giggles as the Oldest Man borrows a curtain for help. He laments how people need to slow down as Korman becomes more and more impatient for the good doctor to get around to diagnosing him.

When Conway finally gets back to Korman, he doesn't diagnose like any other doctor. His big black bag is full of surprising things, including an ape mask. Even Korman, as professional as he is, comes close to losing his composure and bursting into laughter.

Conway's perfect comedic timing, natural funnyman instincts, and meticulous attention to humorous detail always left Carol Burnett's audiences laughing hard and coming back for more.
