Through The Years With Tom Hanks—On His 64th Birthday

Tom Hanks has graced our screens for nearly four decades, acting as a wide array of different characters. From his funny roles to the more serious ones, he always brings about strong emotions in his audience.

Today on July 9, Tom Hanks celebrates his 64th birthday, and in honor of him, we take a look at his incredible career.

Tom Hanks made a literal splash in Hollywood when he burst onto screens in Splash and Big in the 1980s. After establishing himself as a comedic actor, he turned his attention to drama and subsequently showed off his serious acting chops in movies such as Philadelphia and Forrest Gump in the mid-'90s. 

The '90s and '00s saw Hanks as a Hollywood mainstay, starring in movies such as Sleepless In Seattle, The Green Mile, Cast Away, Road to Perdition, and who could forget his iconic voice acting role as Sheriff Woody in the Toy Story franchise.

Over this period he also had a series of fruitful collaborations with director Steven Spielberg, starring in the films Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Bridge of Spies, and The Post. By now Tom Hanks' range as an actor has been on full display, with his abilities to both make us laugh and cry—sometimes simultaneously—showing off his many talents.

These talents have earned him numerous awards and nominations throughout his career, including two Oscar wins, for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, four Golden Globe wins which range from Big in 1989 to Cast Away in 2001, as well as a number of Emmy Awards for series he has directed and produced. At this year's Golden Globes Awards, he was given the Cecil B. Demille Award, which honors "the body of work of a distinguished entertainment professional."

But Tom hasn't only been honored with movie industry awards—in 2016 he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, as well as the French Legion of Honor.

Another aspect of Tom's life that the public adores is his hilarious social media presence and ability to poke fun at himself. His wife Rita Wilson shares a similar sense of humor, so it's no surprise they're an iconic Hollywood power couple that supports each other, both on the red carpet and on social media.  

For his 63rd birthday last year, Tom posted a funny video to his Twitter page, which showed him jumping overboard from a boat in slow motion. He captioned the post: "Look at the cool beach clothes I got for my 63rd Birthday! Hanx!"

We hope Tom Hanks has another incredible birthday this year on his 64th, surrounded by his family and doing what he does best—making other people laugh and feel connected to one another.
