Dogs are not just a man’s best friend; they are also heroes. On top of that, they are not just absolutely adorable, but these canine companions are also incredibly strong and brave animals that can be trained to perform amazing tasks. They are fully capable of helping other living creatures and are sometimes critical in completing rescue missions. Whether it be a service dog or a dog that is part of a special unit, dogs from all over the world have been helping humans for many years with their noble bravery.

Dogs once again proved to be heroes during a horrifying moment in early August 2021. After a large group of beachgoers visiting a beautiful coast in Italy was desperately struggling to get back to the shore, a small team of lifeguards came to their rescue to save them from drowning. However, this heroic team was made up of three dogs from a lifeguard dog unit rather than human lifeguards.

The large group of 14 beachgoers consisted of three separate families, with more than half of those involved in the incident being young children. The scary occurrence took place on Aug. 8, 2021, on the coast of Sperlonga, which is located halfway between Naples and Rome in Italy. Fortunately for the beachgoers, a fast-acting and courageous lifeguard dog unit was quick to come to their rescue and bring them back to shore, safe and sound. Since the rescue took place, people from all over the world have commended the dogs for their heroic and life-saving efforts.

Their Heroic Rescue Mission

A group of three families had been visiting the beautiful waters of Sperlonga before trouble unfortunately ensued. According to CNN, the families were desperately struggling to get back to shore after finding some difficulty about 330 feet away from the shore. Robert Gasbarri is responsible for the center-south department of the Italian rescue dog school SICS. He told CNN that after the families’ inflatables, dinghies, and surf equipment began to capsize in the strong wind and waves, they started to struggle to make their way back to the safety of the shore.

The large group of 14 people included eight children between the ages of 6 and 12. Fortunately, Italy’s lifeguard dogs were quick to jump into action and help the set of families. Gasbarri explained that a family member on the beach noticed the group struggling and started calling for help. The family member luckily captured the attention of the three lifeguard dogs who were close by. According to CNN, SICS patrols around 30 beaches across Italy with 300 dog units, each with one dog and one trainer.

Along with the help of other lifeguards at nearby beaches, the three lifeguard dogs managed to successfully bring the entire group to shore within about 15 minutes, as per CNN. The heroic dogs are named Eros, Mya, and Mira. Gasbarri explained that dogs are “fundamental” in the country’s lifeguard rescues, especially in situations like this that involve multiple people. He added that big groups would normally be too much for just a few lifeguards to handle, which is why the dog units are so crucial.
