Three Elderly Women Move In With Each Other To Self-Isolate

Following the British government’s recommendation that members of the public who are 70 years or older should limit their contact with others due to the COVID-19 outbreak, three elderly friends moved in together this week to self-quarantine and discuss their future living arrangements on BBC Breakfast. Their plans during isolation? Drink wine and watch Netflix.

The three close friends, Doreen, Dotty and Carol, are treating it almost like a sleepover, comparing houses to determine who among the trio has the best place to spend the remainder of their self-imposed quarantine.

"We'll have a week in our own homes in self-isolation and if we're still fit and well then we would decide which house to go and live in,” Doreen told BBC Breakfast.

The women were in high spirits as they further discussed their plans over video chat with BBC Breakfast host Jayne McCubbin. Doreen largely took the lead, making sure to point out each of their house’s pros and cons.

“Dotty’s got a lovely long backyard, which would be great for exercising,” Doreen said. “I have got a front room, in case we get tetchy with each other,” she added. “That might be handy. And I’ve got Netflix so we could watch The Crown.”

At the end of the call, suffice it to say that Doreen was convinced that her house was the best.

Doreen, Dotty and Carol, who all hail from North England, have known each other for more than 40 years, according to LADBible. Having gone through the highs and lows of life together, from divorces to holiday vacations, the three women clearly share a strong friendship that won’t let these trying times get in the way of their companionship.

It helps, of course, that the women also have a charming sense of humor. The ladies said, for example, that they had stocked up on wine for the quarantine, and that they were planning to drink after the interview with BBC Breakfast.

The women even lifted up a small bottle of wine and a wine glass during the video to prove that they were well-stocked and prepared for the days to come.

Viewers from around the world seemed enchanted by the trio’s playfulness, writing comments on Facebook like: “You've created your own little family to care and support one another. Well done ladies. Love your spirit. Stay well and keep safe.”

The ladies’ decision to isolate themselves in the wake of the novel coronavirus outbreak also comes after UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced last Sunday that people over the age of 70 will soon be asked to remain home for as long as four months, according to The Guardian. That doesn’t necessarily mean complete isolation, but given that older individuals are especially vulnerable to the virus, encouraging social distancing is part of the government’s pandemic action plan.

Luckily, Doreen, Dotty and Carol seem in good company and well prepared for the long haul with their Netflix subscription, wine stash and plans for backyard exercise.
