Three newborn puppies are recovering in foster care after being found abandoned in a dumpster in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The case has shocked animal lovers and the Sioux Falls community, prompting an investigation into potential animal cruelty.

The puppies, named Bo, Birdie, and Brody by their rescuers, were discovered the weekend of June 8, 2025, after someone walking by reportedly heard whimpering sounds from a dumpster. The temperatures were very low, but miraculously, the three puppies survived. Upon inspection, the passerby found the puppies inside a cardboard box and immediately contacted Almost Home Canine Rescue, a local nonprofit organization.

The rescue shelter shared the news on its official Facebook page, announcing: “Meet Bo, Birdie, and Brody, three precious 3-week-old puppies who were found abandoned in a box in a dumpster near Kiwanis. These little fighters just opened their eyes and are in desperate need of some TLC. While they’re warm, active, and comfortable now, they’re dehydrated and need extra care to thrive.”

Almost Home quickly transported the puppies to an experienced foster caregiver who could provide round-the-clock care. This included bottle feeding every few hours, monitoring weight gain, and stimulating the puppies to help with basic bodily functions.

Katie Day, the founder of the nonprofit organization, revealed in an interview with KELO that the good Samaritan saved the puppies’ lives and criticized the animal cruelty of whoever abandoned the canines.

In detail, Day told KELO: "There's no point in making puppies suffer," she continued:  "If this good samaritan wouldn't have found these puppies, their fate was death."

The good Samaritan was commended for saving Bo, Brodie and Birdie from the dreary weather and starvation. Day sympathized with the three puppies and thanked the individual for stepping up and taking them to Almost Homes, saying:

"It's too cold for a human being to be staying outside right now, these puppies had no chance."

The story gained traction on social media after Almost Home shared photos and an appeal for donations on Facebook. Within two days, the post raised over $670 and generated hundreds of comments from concerned citizens. Social media users shared their outrage and anger at the individual who abandoned the three puppies and left them out in the cold. One user commented under the initial post:

"Once again, what is wrong with people! Thank goodness they were found!"

Another netizen called for accountability and criticized the owner for doing something so horrible, writing:

"I hope whoever abandoned them is found and held accountable. What a horrible thing to do."

Day also requested information from anyone who might know who the puppies belonged to so that they could be brought to justice: "Somebody has to know something," she continued:

"Somebody knows their friend or family members had puppies."

Day also provided an update on the puppies and their progress in their foster home:

“They are a lot of work, they require constant feedings, you have to weigh them every day and you have to stimulate them to go potty and poop, so there’s a lot of work to them.”

For now, the focus remains on getting the puppies healthy and eventually finding them loving homes.
