Thousands Of People Have Signed A Petition To Spare Husky's Life Even Though He Bit Off A 4-Year-Old's Hand

Polar and Bear, the dogs that their owner claims have always been docile and never shown signs of aggression towards people, were fenced in their backyard when a terrible incident occurred.

While his father was inside, a little boy living next door decided to take the opportunity to approach his neighbor's vinyl fence in an attempt to play with the dogs.

The boy placed a sock over his hand and stuck it through the fence to get the attention of Polar and Bear. His effort succeeded and Bear, seeing the sock and believing it to be a toy, bit down on the boy's hand and pulled. The boy's father went outside to find his son bleeding and missing part of his arm.

He called 911 and informed dispatchers that his son's arm had been ripped off. The father tried to stop his son's bleeding until emergency workers arrived. They flew the boy to a hospital in Salt Lake City. Medical staff stabilized his condition, but his arm could not be reattached because it is assumed to have been eaten by Bear.

In response, the dog owner's family friend, Jessica Nusz, started a petition on Care2 to raise support for Polar and Bear and has garnered over 270,000 signatures thus far. Jessica states in this online petition:

“My best friend’s dog was involved in an unfortunate accident yesterday where a little boy stuck his arm through a fence and he had a sock on his arm. Bear, who was playing with what he thought was a toy, bit down too hard and didn’t see that there was a child on the other side of the fence. With him being a dog, he thought it was a game of tug of war and he bit down too hard and took a lower portion of his arm. This situation is unfortunate on both sides...There are fears that Bear might be put down and he doesn’t deserve to be put down for this freak accident.”

Since the incident, Polar and Bear's owners have been cited for the possession of dangerous animals and two counts of abatement of public nuisance animals. The citations have since been dropped, however, because the owners agreed for the two pups to be taken to an animal rescue center or sanctuary according to KUTV.

As for the little boy, he recently received his prosthetic arm and his mom is commemorating this new chapter by saying "We’re going to embrace his difference and always show that his injury doesn’t define him, it’s just a part of his story" on Facebook.
