Thomas Markle Could Testify Against Meghan In Lawsuit Against Mail On Sunday

Last October, the Duchess of Sussex launched legal action against UK based media Associated Newspapers, citing the “misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018” as their claims against the publishers.

The Mail on Sunday, which is part of Associated Newspapers, is accused of releasing a private letter written by Meghan Markle to her father, Thomas Markle last year. The publication is countering the accusation by claiming there is a “huge and legitimate” interest in the personal lives of the Royal family.

According to Sky News, legal documents regarding the lawsuit have emerged showing the Mail will rely on evidence provided by Thomas Markle who they claim "had a weighty right to tell his version of what had happened between himself and his daughter including the contents of the letter".

Should the case go to trial, there is stark possibility both Mr Markle and the Duchess of Sussex will be called to the stand to testify. The Mail on Sunday suggests Mr Markle is prepared for such an event.

The publication also claims Meghan "did not have a reasonable expectation of privacy that the contents of the letter were private and would remain so".

They argue the publication of the letter happened in response to an article written by People magazine in which an anonymous friend of Meghan’s misrepresented the contents of the letter in question. The article claimed Meghan had written to her father saying "Dad, I'm so heartbroken, I love you, I have one father. Please stop victimizing me through the media so we can repair our relationship."

Mr. Markle spoke to the Mail in response to his daughter’s lawsuit, saying the letter was presented in a way that ‘vilified’ him.

“It was presented as her reaching out and writing a loving letter in the hope of healing the rift, but the letter isn’t like that at all,” Mr Markle said. “I have the right to defend myself.”

Prince Harry has spoken out in defense of his wife, releasing a statement that condemned the British tabloid media and accused them of being “knowingly false and malicious.”

A spokeswoman for Schillings also commented at the time, saying the "intrusive" publication of the private letter was part of a campaign lead by the media association to write "false and deliberately derogatory" stories about the Duchess of Sussex.

The Mail, however, stands by the story and cetegorically denies they edited the letter in a way that vilified Meghan.
