Being nice is usually a simple thing. Holding the door open when someone is close behind you and using good manners are nice things to do. Kindness requires a little more thoughtfulness and sometimes an act of sacrifice.

That’s the type of kindness that eleven-year-old Ty Barber practiced at a baseball game in July 2017. Ty is a big sports fan and is involved in the little league himself. He was at a Buffalo Bisons game and had caught a ball between innings.

Every little leaguer wants to catch a ball at a baseball game, whether they’re playing or not! Ty was excited throughout the rest of the game at the thought of having the ball for himself.

At the end of the game, though, Ty chose to give away the prized ball that he had caught for himself to someone else. Why did he do this? It was a true act of kindness and utmost respect.

Ty took notice of something else that happened during the game that was special that day. Ninety-six year old WWII veteran Richard Snethen was sitting in Ty’s section and was honored for his service during the game.

Knowing that veterans are often paid lip service for their sacrifices for the country, Ty knew that he wanted to do something a bit more. He wanted to do something special to honor this veteran.

After the game was over, Ty found Snethen and gave him the prize ball that he had caught as an act of thanks for Snethen’s great service.

Snethen truly appreciated the gesture, calling it one of the most moving moments of his long, storied life. Not only did he feel it was a gesture of sincere thanks, but it was a symbol of hope for the future of the youth of America.

Snethen already had a shelf of baseball items at home, and the treasured ball is now encased on that shelf next to a poem that he was inspired to write after Ty’s kind gesture.

Many who saw the video feel that Ty acted with more grace than many adults in America. What do you think? Pass this along to others to see what they think of this remarkable young man!
