Sure, you can buy fancy scented garbage bags at the grocery store but for those of us who appreciate simple DIYs, this trick may be more suited for you. There are several things you can do to keep your garbage can smelling fresh, like tossing in a dryer sheet, filling the bottom with kitty litter, or sprinkling baking soda. However, none of them work quite as well as the cotton ball trick.

The process is extremely simple: soak a cotton ball in an essential oil (we recommend tea tree, mint, or citrus) and drop it in the can. That’s it! It will not only deodorize the inside of the can, but also make the surrounding area smell great.

Lemongrass oil and other citrus-based concoctions are preferred if you tend to keep your trash outside. Insects and rodents hate the smell, so your trash will be safe from getting torn apart and eaten by pests.

It’s recommended that you place the cotton ball at the bottom of the trash, since the oils are very concentrated and strong. You can do this trick as often as you wish, or until the garbage can starts to stink again. The best part about this trick is that you can just drop the cotton ball in and then forget about it for a while. Low-maintenance is never a bad thing :)
