Students may be out of school for the summer. But one school district in Virginia feels this is no reason they have to stop feeding their children.

The public school system in Danville, Virginia purchased a food truck that it now uses to feed students and a few non-students in the district. Phillip Gardner is the director of nutrition for the school system. He says the $42,000 truck was purchased because the school district wants to make sure the children in the area are provided with proper nutrition throughout the summer.

The fact is, many parents struggle to provide their children with proper nutrition throughout the summer. Danville School District is doing what it can to help the situation.

The food truck will serve meals at two locations during the summer. All students in the district will be provided with free meals. Adults will have to pay $3.65 for a plate. The menu for June was posted on Twitter and the children can look forward to meals that range from beef teriyaki to chicken wings.

Gardner says more than 600 meals were served since the truck became operational in June. He said that both parents and students seem to appreciate having the option to eat from the food truck.

One parent, Amada Reaves, expressed her gratitude for the gesture made by the school district. She says the food truck is a great help to her and her four children. The food truck is actually the fourth option children in the district have to receive meals in the summer months. The district has also served meals at three schools in the area over the summer months since 2014.

There are talks that the food truck will also be used this fall when classes start up again. The plan is for the truck to be present at different schools on each day to add a novel food option for the students.

Gardner says the district is committed to feeding their kids all throughout the year. Feed America is a non-profit that keeps track of statistics for food and hunger.

The organization says one in six children in America does not know who will provide their next meal. This fact makes the gesture from the Danville School District even more commendable.
