Instead of ordering another generic dish from your "go to" take out place, it's time to create your own dish. Try using this recipe for Baked General Tso Chicken. With your health in mind, you will be happy to know, there is no frying involved. The best part is that it will taste just as good, if not better, than any General Tso you have ever had!

This recipe still has the tasty crispy layer so you won't miss any crunch. It also has sauce which you can make hot or leave mild. It's up to you how spicy you make it. Make it to suite you and your families' needs. It is served best over a bed of fried or plain rice. You could also garnish with green onions or sesame seeds as the restaurants do. Be as creative as you like!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chick breast - cut into 2 inch chunks
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 2 cups crushed corn flakes

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tbs soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 3 tbs rice vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp sriracha sauce
  • 1 tbs hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbs corn starch mixd with 2 tbs water
  • 1 1/2 tbs granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp toasted or regular sesame oil (optional)
  • 2 finely sliced, Chinese dried red chiles (optional)
  • sesame seeds (optional)

Directions:

  1.  Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Be sure you have an oven rack placed in the upper middle of your oven.
  2. Line a large cooking tray with parchment paper.
  3. You will need three large bowls. Fill the first with flour. The second will needs eggs and the last will be for the crushed corn flakes.
  4. Take the chicken, dip in the flour, then the egg, and then you will cover with the cornflakes. You can gently roll or press in the corn flakes to coat the chicken.
  5. Once coated well, place onto the cooking tray.
  6. Set the timer for 13 minutes. Bake until the chicken is cooked thoroughly and the cornflakes are golden brown.
  7. While chicken is baking, you can begin the sauce. Put all ingredients (except cornstarch) in a medium size pot and bring to a gentle boil.
  8. Add the cornstarch to water and stir. Slowly add to the sauce while continuing to stir. Cook until sauce thickens. Once thickened, turn off the heat.
  9. Once chicken is completely baked, transfer to a large pan. Turn the heat on low and pour the sauce over the chicken. Be sure you coat each piece evenly. This will be the time to include your options - sesame oil, sesame seeds and chiles

Your dish is now ready to serve. Turn off the heat and serve promptly.
