When Ohio police officer Matthew Hickey decided it was time to retire from the task force after 34 years, he believed that he would spend the rest of his life with his favorite four-legged friend. Unfortunately for him, it wouldn't be easy. Ohio state law says that his K-9 partner had to be auctioned off to the highest bigger. The emotional bond he shared with his K-9 partner for the last four year was not enough to keep them together.

Hickory compares the process of training a dog to raising a child. You develop an unbreakable bond through basic training. You learn a lot about your companion when you spend so much time working together. The dog is the son he never had. Luckily, residents of the town he served were not going to let him retire alone. Even the mayor was upset about this law.

The officer was able to build up a strong following as community members stood by his side. An outside vendor estimated the K-9 to be worth $3,500. Because the dog's value exceeded $1,000 and Ajax was considered city property, Hickory was told that the dog would need to be put up for sale at an auction.

Community members did not give up. They continued to help raise money for Hickory, and what they did next attained national attention. Citizens from all over the United States helped raise more than $70,000. But in a crazy turn of events, the money wasn't all he needed to retire with his beloved furry friend.

See how the story ends in the video posted below. You will not believe what Hickory did with the money.

After all the overwhelming support for Hickory and his canine companion, city officials agreed to let the two retire together in peace for one dollar. Hickory donated the rest of the money to Vested Interest in K9, Inc.
