Many know about the obesity epidemic happening in the United States. What you may not know, however, is that humans aren't the only ones at risk. That's exactly what rescuers discovered one day - a 116-pound dog.

Fatty Arbuckle, also known as "Arby", was found in a field. He was abandoned by his previous owner after out-of-control weight gain. He was too fat to move, walk, or lie down without human assistance. If he'd remained in the field and without help, he likely would've died. Luckily, that didn't happen, thanks to speedy response of rescuers. Arby was taken in and began his slow road back to recovery.

It was soon discovered that Arby suffers from hypothyroidism, a condition of the thyroid gland, which helped contribute to his obesity. Hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid doesn't produce enough of the hormone thyroxine. Thyroxine controls a human or dog's metabolism, the process by which the body converts food into fuel. Luckily, this condition is relatively easy to treat with daily medication.

Arby was fostered by a kind woman named Laura. She describes the first day she took him home - "I was worried he wasn’t going to make it in the car ride." Arby was depressed and unresponsive. He didn't want to go outside or interact with anyone. Luckily, the rescuers, his foster mom, and his new owner Jane Lynch never gave up on him.

The wonderful humans around Arby nursed him back to health, combining medication with slow, gentle exercise. Slowly but surely, he began to lose weight. Arby's breed should typically only be about 50 pounds, so it took a lot of patience. After months of effort and care, Arby had slimmed down to 80 pounds - still not the ideal weight, but much healthier than his original state.

As the weight began to fall off, his entire disposition changed. Suddenly, Arby could move, sleep, and play like a normal dog. He began to display a cheerful, goofy disposition that had been buried under his previous depression. Jane Lynch became his pet-parent and gave him a forever home. "He’s the funniest, goofiest guy," she said on Instagram.

Arby isn't at his goal weight yet (65 pounds) but he's making good progress - and he's living a great life. The smile on his face is a testimony of his amazing recovery. What was once an obese, abandoned dog is now a handsome, chunky friend. It's all thanks to the rescuers, his foster mom, and the kindness of Jane Lynch.
