In this modern day and age, we are constantly bombarded by technology. Our electronics can end up taking up most of our time and detracting from our creative processes. Instead of going straight to the screen in the morning, there are other healthy routines we can take on that can truly kickstart our creativity. The subconscious mind has many inner-workings. It never rests, yet it isn't always the most active force in our mind because we may become easily distracted in our busy modern lives.

Our subconscious or unconscious mind has a profound sense of knowing about all aspects of our lives; it knows how to best help us heal and move forward in our lives. The unconscious mind is often neglected. However, a study conducted by the Department of Psychology at Yale University suggests that this part of the human mind precedes the conscious mind, thus emphasizing its importance.

Each night, before you lay down to go to sleep, take the time to set an intention or request for your unconscious mind to take care of while your body rests and recovers throughout the night. This is supposed to be a quiet time for reflection and meditation. Write down questions, thoughts, or requests for your own subconscious to work on throughout the night as you sleep. It is best to be direct and concise, that way your answers will be easier for you to interpret in the morning when you rise. Now, while your body rests for the night, your subconscious mind will be hard at work, putting together the answers to the requests you made.

Now here is the fun part! When you wake up in the morning, go straight for your journal instead of your smartphone or other electronic devices. Research published in the Journal of Neurophysiology has shown that a good night of sleep can cause you to become more creative in the morning as soon as you wake up. The workings of the unconscious mind are extensive during the process of sleep. Parts of the brain are still active, even during sleep. The brain makes many different connections during this time; that is where your individual creativity comes into play. A majority of people tend to check their phones upon waking up.

However, getting the most out of this special time when the brain is adjusting from sleeping to waking up is crucial for getting the most from your creativity and higher learning. At first, this process may be difficult to adjust to. Listening to your intuitive mind may be hard. However, with time and consistent practice, you may become more apt at translating your subconscious feelings into articulated thoughts and actionable ideas. There really is no wrong way to write about what you are sensing from yourself during this time. Listen to your inner sense of knowing. You may be presently surprised by what you are confronted with. Consider your subconscious mind a muscle that needs to be worked out in order to get stronger. It may take time to become adept at this ability. Intuition and creativity can be developed over time.
