On July 14, 2015, her sons returned from a graduation party. They were not known drug abusers. They went to a party and someone offered them a pill. They said yes. It was later discovered that this pill was oxycodone. They died from mixing the painkiller with alcohol.

Rebecca was devastated. She couldn’t imagine a life without her sons. But she knew she had to do something. She needed to change something. Since her sons’ deaths, Rebecca has talked to 60,000 students along with their parents. She wants to teach teens that you should say no to any drugs of any kind.

Drugs don’t know any stigma. It can happen to anyone. It only takes on time, one decisions, or one party to completely change the lives of many people. Don’t assume it won’t happen. Rebecca works hard to ensure people are talking about the dangers of prescription drugs.

It important to talk to teens and young adults about the pressures of all kinds of drugs. They might think “Oh a doctor prescribed these so they must be okay to take.” They might not know the risk of taking medicine that isn’t prescribed to them.

To honor her sons, she created a 525 Foundation. She named it after her sons’ hockey numbers. This is a place to not only discuss the dangers of prescription drugs, but it is also a place where people can discard their unused medications before they end up in the wrong hands.

Rebecca warns teens to avoid certain situations where drugs are present. She suggests friends should have a safe word to signal to each other when they need to leave a party. It is important to have an exit plan planned before they attend a party.
