This Man Was Locked Inside His Body For A Decade, Now He's Becoming A Father

Being in a coma is often considered a worst-case scenario but, for Martin Pistorius, it became a reality for most of his young adult life. Thankfully, this is one story that has a very happy ending!

Martin had a perfectly normal childhood until he turned twelve-years-old and suddenly developed flu-like symptoms. Rather than improving with time, Martin continued to grow consistently worse. Eventually, he slipped into a coma-like condition where he remained for four years.

Then, one day, Martin woke up but, rather than being able to move, he found himself paralyzed and unable to communicate with his family. Martin’s doctors assured his parents that he was going to be like a vegetable for the rest of his life and that he was mentally like a small child.

Rather than treat Martin like the sixteen-year-old he had become, his parents decided to treat him like a much younger child. He stayed at a care home where they left him to watch shows such as “Barney and Friends” for endless hours.

Martin had no way to escape the show or reveal how miserable he was. Martin now tells us that he spent those years feeling much like a ghost who could hear everyone around him but had no way to communicate.

Martin’s breakthrough finally came when he was twenty-four-years-old and a new care worker ran tests to discover that he was not in a coma but simply unable to speak. It turned out Martin suffered from something called cryptococcal meningitis. This began the start of intense therapy for the young man as he worked to regain his lost abilities.

Now, Martin is in his 40’s and is able to use his arms, speak through a text-to-speech device, use a wheelchair, and drive a car. As a motivational speaker, Martin uses his horrifying experience to help others overcome their problems.

But that’s not the best news! In 2008, Martin fell in love with a beautiful social worker named Joanna. The two dreamed of starting a family but, after years of treatment, it was starting to seem hopeless with doctors warning them that they could never conceive.

It was during a trip when Joanna seemed to be suffering from food poisoning that they discovered she was pregnant. Now, Martin is looking forward to being a dad by learning sign language and speaking to the unborn child using his special text-to-speech device.

We can’t think of a happier event for the man who endured so much sadness as a boy! What are your thoughts on this story? We would love to hear your opinion in the comments - and pass this hopeful story on to your friends and loved ones! Let's spread some love today.
