Dogs truly are man's best friend. From constant companionship to limitless snuggles, a dog is always there for you when you need it to be.

Attleboro, Massachusetts Mayor Paul Heroux has paid back this love to his dog in spades. Heroux's 10-year-old Japanese wolf-dog, Mura, was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Rather than wallow in the grief of the situation, Heroux determined that he was going to take his trusty sidekick on the ultimate road trip.

Mura has been a constant fixture by the mayor's side. She even appeared with him in his campaign materials, affectionately gaining the title of "first dog." It is no surprise that the mayor's last name is pronounced "hero" because it is clear that he has been a hero to Mura in her struggle with cancer.

To make the most of their last days together, the duo traveled 8,500 miles, traversing the country between Massachusetts and California. Heroux chronicled their journey on his Facebook page, much to the delight of many other people now able to join in on the fun.

Along the way, Mura became a celebrity in her own right. With adventures stretching from the Grand Canyon to Yellowstone National Park, followers eagerly awaited each new update to try to guess where the lovable pup would end up next. Mura is now resting back at home in her own bed. She had quite the adventure!

Fortunately, the mayor recognized how many people fell in love with Mura and her journey and he has decided to keep updating his Facebook page. Be sure to check it out so that you can also keep in touch with this fun duo. Spread the story to anyone else who loves dogs and wants to check up to see how this sweet up and her owner are doing. We know that the two will appreciate your love and prayers!
