This Is Why You're Tired: Being A Mother Is Equivalent To Working 2.5 Jobs, Study Says

May 09, 2019 by apost team

The average American work week is almost 40 hours. Counting the commute back and forth and some overtime, it might amount to 50-55 hours. It's no wonder the popular TGIF, 'Thank God it's Friday,' slogan even became a restaurant name. But what if you're a mother?

In the first place, the TGIF slogan totally loses its verve. In fact, if you have school-age children, the weekends can be more work than the weekends. If one of them is sick, you might even spend half the night up comforting them and attending to their needs.

Welch's did a study on 2000 American mothers with children ranging in ages between 5-12. Their findings concluded that the average mother spends more than double the time working as those without children. These moms are working from before 6:30 AM until after 8:30 PM.

Needless to say, that's a pretty long day for anyone, and if you're not tired after several continuous days of that schedule, you just wouldn't be normal.

The study also found that of the time between 6:30 and 8:30 PM there is about an hour of that time the mother has for herself. This may be when the kids are watching TV, playing video games, etc. It's important that mothers use this time wisely to attend to their own needs.

Of course, none of this is news to any of the mothers who are involved in this grueling, more than a full-time job, but most love their children so much that the rewards and benefits of happy children outweigh the exhaustion.

It's great that Welch's took the time to actually do a study on the issue so now there's a good reference for moms to cite if someone has the nerve to ask them why they're so tired.
