Every day unique friendships are birthed throughout our diverse world. Many people know of the heart-warming friendship between Mzee the hippopotamus and Aldabra the giant tortoise. These two have the longest lasting friendship while being two very different animals.

In Disney’s The Lion King, the lion cub, Simba, was taken in by a meerkat named Timon and a warthog named Pumbaa. A new friendship has blossomed at the Mefou Primate Sanctuary in Africa. Bobo, the giant silverback gorilla, has taken in a tiny little creature of his own.

The Mefou Primate Santuary is where Bobo lives, and he was brought there at the young age of two. Here he is protected from animal poachers and other hunters. Ape Action Africa has been able to house Bobo and other gorillas at this safe haven along with over 300 hundred other animals that have been rescued and brought to live at the sanctuary for safety. Among this number includes a tiny bush baby who has won the heart of Bobo the giant silverback gorilla.

Bobo was brought to the sanctuary in 1994 following the death of his mother. She was killed by poachers. Out of his western lowland group, Bobo is the dominant male.

Though he no longer has his mom and didn’t get to grow up with her in his life, Bobo has learned to be a gorilla with compassion. While walking through the forest of the sanctuary one day, Bobo met the tiny bush baby. Instantly Bobo was drawn to the adorable creature. What followed their initial encounter shocked all of the caretakers at the sanctuary. Bobo the gorilla dipped his giant hand down and lifted the tiny bush baby up and held it in his arms for security.

According to Ape Action Africa, the bush baby may have been friends with Bobo for some time now. A post on Facebook stated that the bush baby could have possibly been living with the gorillas the entire time. The time spent together in the enclosure would allow them to become close friends. The bush baby showed no sense of fear when around the Bobo and the other giant gorillas.

Many of the other gorillas became curious about the little primate creature and its interaction with Bobo. While in the enclosure Bobo didn’t hinder the other gorillas from coming to take a look at his tiny new friend. However, he would not let anyone else hold the small bush baby. He successfully kept them all a safe distance away from his new friend. It isn’t often that you see bush babies out in the open like this during the day. These creatures are known to be nocturnal.

On this day, the tiny bush baby and Bobo played together for nearly two hours. When they finished playing, Bobo surprised everyone even more with his actions. Walking over to the trees that were close by, Bobo placed the tiny bush baby on the ground, and the bush baby went on its way safely.

Have you ever witnessed two very distinct creatures bond in friendship? What’s your story?
