This Developer Builds A Neighborhood Of Tiny Houses For Austin's Homeless Community

An Austin real estate developer has recently come up with a radical solution that he believes could solve homelessness in the area. Alan Graham realized that the current housing programs weren't going to solve the homeless crisis, but a community like the one he developed was a much more effective step in offering a real solution.

His housing development spans 27 acres, and it contains small houses designed to shelter the homeless people in Austin, Texas. For 20 years, Graham has felt the need to help the homeless. He began in 1998 by providing food for homeless people in the streets of Austin that he delivered with a minivan. The program was a social outreach ministry that he called "Mobile Loaves & Fishes," which is a reference to the charitable teachings of Christ.

The food program became the largest of its kind in Central Texas, but Graham didn't stop there. Today, Graham is pursuing the vision of creating an entire community for the homeless that provides a lot more than mere shelter.

The community provides all the essential things that people need, including a grocery store, a medical center, a barbershop, organic gardens and even a movie theater.

Graham couldn't have made his vision into a reality without the help of other concerned people. With donations of more than $18 million, he built the community, and it is up and running to provide the homeless a means to survive, and it also a gives them a sense of having a community where they feel that they belong.

It's rare to find a sanctuary for the homeless where people can finally find an end to a life of hardship and suffering.

The community helps the homeless become more self-sufficient members of society. Along with their new residences and basic resources, they also receive employment. The various businesses and services in the community are places where the residents can find work.

The jobs pay $12 per hour, which is more than enough for the residents to pay their rent of $200 to $350 per month.

Perhaps the most remarkable fact about the community is Graham built this community with no help from the government or religious organizations. It was all funded through private donations. It seems that some people are finally willing to admit the severity of the problem of homelessness in America, and they're willing to pitch in to help develop a better solution.
