What should have been a joyous event with family and friends was a day that went horribly wrong and that ended up being one of the worst days of his life.

Dennis Dickey wanted to celebrate letting other people know the gender of his baby on April 23, 2017. Along with his wife, the couple wanted to find out what they were having in front of close family members and their friends. Dennis is a border patrol agent and came up with a fun idea to reveal the gender of their baby.

His decision led to pleading guilty in court for starting a wildfire.

The fire that was started burned over 45,000 acres. Several residents had to leave their homes, and there was a significant amount of land that was burned that resulted in animals having to leave the area as well. About 800 firefighters battled the fire that was started. The blaze caused over $8 million in damages.

On the day that Dennis and his wife found out the gender of their baby, it was windy. It was also dry that day, creating an ideal scenario for a fire to start. Dennis filled a target with a special powder that was either pink or blue depending on the gender of the baby. Tannerite was also used as a way to create an explosion. Although this is a legal substance, it's very explosive.

Dennis fired his gun, and sparks went flying to the brush that was nearby.

Since the brush was dry and the wind was blowing, the sparks quickly got out of hand and resulted in a large fire that got out of control. He tried his best to put the fire out, but it was too much for him to handle. Dennis contacted the local fire department as well as the police department to let them know what happened.
