This Blind Audition On 'The Voice' Seriously Confused Blake Shelton

Jul 11, 2020 by apost team

During The Voice Blind Auditions in 2020, alt-rock singer Micah Iverson performed Kodaline's All I Want. While everyone was impressed with his performance, Blake Shelton may have been a tad bit confused about the genre of music.

The story began when Iverson covered Kodaline's (an Irish rock band) All I Want. The excellent performance earned three great ratings from the judges. Kelly Clarkson was in the lead, following by Nick Jonas, and Blake. Kelly gave her elevator pitch, hoping to win the favor of the singer due to their shared love of alt-rock.

Nick went next, saying that the early music of the Jonas Brothers was an "emo pop-rock band." His elevator pitch included a detailed look at his coaching abilities. He even added, "We could deep dive into the best if the emo pop-rock stuff." Blake found Jonas' last statement a bit peculiar and asked for further clarification.

"The what? What are they talking about? Is that a thing?" Blake asked. Being a country singer, it is no wonder Blake Shelton had never heard of the pop-rock genre before. During the late 90s to early 2000s, pop-rock was one of the most popular genres out there. Alternative and indie bands such as Death Cab for Cutie and Switchfoot took center stage back then.

Nick took no time calling Blake out on his misconception. "I don't know how connected to emo-pop angst rock Blake will be," he stated in a clear effort to win Micah's favor.

Blake sheepishly admitted to thinking that pop-rock was not a genre, but a candy. And sure enough, there is also a candy named Pop-Rocks! The situation got even more comical when Iverson attempted to console Blake on his confusion. Micah stated that the reference to that specific genre may have been too niche.

"You said a little more 'nish? What the hell does that mean?" Blake was entirely confused by this point in the conversation. John Legend did not miss this excellent opportunity to pipe in.

"It's another genre you've never heard about," he said. While Shelton may not be aware of recent additions to the world of music genres, his talent is like no other. Shelton has won the show six times and knows how to make his dream work!

Even without the knowledge to back his experience, Blake's season 3 winner, Cassadee Pope, was in a pop-punk emo band. This means that he must have had some knowledge about the different variations of pop.

Sadly, this misconception caused Blake to lose the interest of Micah. The contestant chose to go on Kelly's team, becoming the only male on her all-female team. "See @blakeshelton... you learn something new everyday...Pop rock is a candy AND a genre. You're welcome! Micah may be the only male on #TeamKelly so far but an AMAZING addition!" Kelly tweeted, shortly after the audition.
