Halloween is a national holiday that has been celebrated for decades. Despite this holiday's popularity, it has seen recent changes. With each passing year, Halloween transforms in little ways that make a big difference when put together.

The activity of going from house to house asking for candy was only started in the 1920's. As children, we often assume that everyone has experienced Halloween in the same way.

All of the friends we know trick-or-treat, carve pumpkins and dress up for this holiday, so we assume that everyone follows suit. This may not always be true.

Christine Richardson is a resident of Zion, Michigan who has been watching her elderly mother closely for nearly a decade. Her mother, Mary Spaeth, is 91 years old and is in good health. However, her daughter noticed a stark difference in Mary's behavior on October 28th.

Christine described her mother's demeanor as a "funk" of which she couldn't seem to get out. She brainstormed different ways to help cheer her mother up.

Christine understood how much Mary loved seeing her children and great-grandchildren. She called her mother on Sunday and said that the family would come to visit for Halloween.

Christine told her mother to dress up, but Mary didn't understand the concept of Halloween.

Although Christine and her other siblings had grown up with Halloween, her mother Mary never had participated. In the 1940s, Mary emigrated from Croatia and raised her family in the United States.

Although she didn't join, Mary made sure that her family partook in the traditional holidays of the U.S. In an interview with WITI, Christine described how her mother learned about the concept of Halloween.

Because Mary's nickname is 'Baba', she became 'Baba the Bunny when she put on a pair of bunny ears. This became her first Halloween costume ever.

Christine had her mother practice at their home before carrying on to other houses. In a video shot by Christine, 'Baba the Bunny' can be seen knocking on the family's door. When her grandson answers, Mary says "Good morning, my grandson". After trying for a third time, Mary finally says her first "trick-or-treat" and receives candy from her grandson.

Christine took her mother to some other houses around the neighborhood and was ecstatic to see the excitement on her mother's face. Mary couldn't stop talking about the amazing experience of her first Halloween.
