Third-Grader Who Was Not Allowed School Picture Because Of Hair Extensions Gets To Shine In New Photo Shoot

At the conservative Paragon Charter Academy in Jackson, Michigan, the staff told a third-grader named Mirian Scott that she couldn't have her school picture taken because her hair was not her natural color that day.

As NBC reported, Mirian's red hair extensions were not considered appropriate to represent the school, who were pretty strict about their hair and dress code rules. She was sent back to class and forced to retake her photos on another day only after changing her hair.

While her story went viral in October, Mirian's confidence had taken a drop. One could only imagine how it would feel to be singled out from everybody else due to something as trivial as hair color.

Because of her confinement to these school rules, she no longer had the room to grow, so her parents took her out of school in search of a new one where she would encounter more support.

After her story made its way around the community, photographers began contacting the family to offer taking pictures for her that would be better than any old school photo. In particular, Jermaine Horton connected with her story, and the family arranged a photoshoot with Jermaine Horton Photography.

As the photographer wrote on Facebook, "When I heard about this story I was furious as a parent because the first thing I thought about was the impact of what this would do to such a beautiful little girl." 

In the new photos, Mirian was allowed to be herself entirely, dyed hair and all! After being able to experiment with different poses, outfits, and expressions, her confidence was boosted, and her spirits restored. "It was fun, you got to pose and change clothes and got to be yourself," the young lady told WILX.
