Thief Invades Home Of Wheelchair-Bound Pensioner, Takes Old Man's Money Right In Front Of His Eyes

In today’s world, criminal behavior has certainly become a regular part of life. Too often, we hear stories of people breaking into homes while the owners are away or on vacation; these stories end in no damage to the property but plenty of missing money and possessions. But, just when we thought that we’d heard it all, a thief in a new robbery is showing us the depths of human depravity.

An 88-year-old man in Leeds named Dennis Birch was minding his own business in his own home when a bold thief decided to walk right into the residence. Dennis is wheel-chair bound, making it impossible for him to put up a fight. The elderly man leaves his house door open to combat the heat of the day, making him a prime target for a robbery.

When the thief entered his home, he started by walking in without any invitation and began talking with Dennis in a friendly manner before he grabbed the elderly man’s wallet and began to sort through the money it contained. He stole the equivalent of $6 before leaving the house. While the intruder spoke in a strange language, he was still able to use it to distract the elderly man so that he wouldn’t know he was being taken advantage of.

It’s a mixed blessing that Birch was paying little attention and didn’t even know that he had been robbed, simply accepting the intruder as a strange visitor. It was Dennis’ caretaker that recognized video footage that showed the robbery taking place. After noticing the strange man, the caretaker talked to Dennis’ step-son, Paul Daley, about the event. Paul has since spoken to the police and they are examining the situation and investigating the crime.

Paul Daley is now angry about the crime and concerned about leaving his step-father alone. Paul points out that the criminal used conversation to distract Dennis while he stole the money. While Dennis tried to get the man to leave, there was nothing he could do. Paul is now afraid that the thief will make a return or, just as scary, pass the word along that Dennis is unable to defend himself.

We can only hope that the police will do their job and manage to catch the criminal before he can come back to steal from Dennis or someone else. In some cases involving criminal behavior caught on CCTV cameras, the police chose to place armed guards in the area to protect the victim and prevent further crimes.

Have you ever heard of a criminal that was quite so bold? Have you got any ideas to help stop criminal behavior among the elderly? Add your thoughts and suggestions to the comments, then invite your friends to weigh in on the conversation.
