These Shoppers Were Sick Of Excess Plastic On Food Items - So They Dumped It All At Supermarket Checkout

An increasing number of people globally are getting sick of the excess packaging used by supermarkets and other businesses.

To protest this wasteful practice, consumers are coordinating "Plastic Attacks" at their local supermarkets.

Back in early June, shoppers at a Danish grocery store staged such a protest. They walked into their local supermarket and did their normal shopping. However, when it came to checkout time, the protest began.

They began removing all the excess packaging used on fruits, vegetables, and other groceries. All of that packaging got left at the checkout.

The movement has spread throughout Europe, with the UK grocery Tesco being one of the latest targets.

A group of 25 shoppers doesn't like the levels of excess packaging this supermarket giant was using. They decided to take their dislike to the market itself. They paid for their purchases but left the excess packaging behind.

They made it a point to demonstrate that the excess packaging is not needed for simple grocery shopping. Instead of relying on the packaging offered by the supermarket, they brought their own reusable bags, glass jars, and even bread bags.

The good news is that consumers actually like to make sensible choices when it comes to packaging. Often, the problem is they have no choice. They are presented with prepackaged fruits and vegetables, with no other choices presented.

Newer, more sustainable options are being developed, but they are not widely available yet.

Make it a point to choose options that use minimal packaging if any at all. Ask your local grocer for more sustainable options. Coordinate and participate in your own Plastic Attack.
