These 10 "Healthy" Breakfast Items Are Actually Even Worse For You Than A Donut

Jun 05, 2018 by apost team

There are some foods that are universally understood to be healthy, like fruit, and some that are considered unhealthy, like donuts. Well, it turns out we've been wrong all along! If you're anything like us, some of the things on this list will definitely surprise you.

Glazed Donut: 260 Calories, 12g sugar

Here’s our starting point. Your average donut has 12 grams of sugar and is just under 300 calories. If that sounds bad, wait until you see how much sugar your favorite “healthy” breakfast is sneaking into your body!

1. Raisin Bran: 190 calories, 18g sugar

Most people choose (or avoid) raisin bran because it sounds like the “healthy” option. In reality, however, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran has a full 6 grams of sugar more than a dunkin donut! Now if you’ve been avoiding it, you no longer have to feel guilty.

2. Vanilla Almond Milk: 80 calories, 13g sugar

Flavored soy and almond milks might be delicious replacements for cow’s milk, but they have a sneaky amount of sugar. Try using unsweetened or light versions for a healthier alternative that won’t give you a sugar high.

3. Blueberry Yogurt: 290 calories, 31g sugar

Yogurt can be great for you, but make sure you always read the label! Low fat often means high sugar, and flavored options tend to be almost as bad for you as ice cream, like Noosa’s Blueberry Yogurt, for example. Stick to naturally flavored yogurt, or even better, add your own fresh or frozen fruit!

4. Protein Granola: 210 calories, 14g sugar

Granola sounds like a great alternative to sugar-packed cereals, but make sure you’re reading the label, as you could be getting tricked into eating a granola with even more sugar than a donut, like Nature Valley’s Cranberry Almond Protein Granola. Try making your own or buying granola flavored with honey.

5. Cinnamon Bagel: 380 calories, 32g sugar

If you think you’re making the smart decision by reaching for a bagel instead of a donut, think again! Panera’s Cinnamon Crunch Bagel has both more calories and sugar than your average donut, even without cream cheese.

6. Acai Bowl: 620 calories, 54g sugar

These bowls may look beautiful and be as instagrammable as they come, but be wary of how much you’re actually eating. Even all-natural ingredients like fruit, honey, and coconut can be unhealthy when eaten in large quantities like those found in Liquiteria’s Mean Green Acai Bowl.

7. Orange Juice: 110 calories, 22g sugar

If you’ve been warned to be careful when it comes to juices, this is why. In order to make orange juice as sweet and delicious to drink as possible, companies like Tropicana often add copious amounts of sugar. Make your OJ from scratch to avoid the sugar rush!

8. Blueberry Muffin: 460 calories, 40g sugar

If you’re deciding between a muffin and a donut, this just made your choice a whole lot easier. While donuts may seem like the more sugary option, they easily come in second to most muffins, Panera’s Blueberry Muffin included.

9. Small Smoothie; 310 calories, 67 g sugar

Along the same lines as juice and acai bowls, smoothies can be dangerously high in sugar and should only be consumed on occasion except under special circumstances. If you’re a smoothie addict, make sure you check the nutrition facts at your favorite smoothie joint before you order!

10. Medium Banana: 110 calories, 14g sugar

This may come as a surprise to you, but even a banana has more sugar than a donut! Luckily, those sugars are natural, so a banana a day isn’t going to make you gain weight, as long as you’re keeping any additional sugars to a minimum.

Did any of these foods surprise you as much as they surprised us? Show this to your donut-loving friends to show them that you're donut addictions aren't as bad as you thought!
