'The Voice': Unique Sibling Trio Receives First 4-Chair Turn Of The Season

Sep 23, 2021 by apost team

“The Voice” premiered on Sept. 20, meaning another season of stunning performances, fresh talent and plenty of awe-inspiring television moments. And because of the exceptional singers that appeared early on, it didn’t take long for all four judges — Blake Shelton, John Legend, Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson — to have their first four-chair turn.

During the show’s blind audition process, all four judges face away from the stage as the contestants give it their best shot on “The Voice” stage. If one of the judges decides that they want to mentor the act that’s performing, then they hit a button and their chair turns toward the stage. When all four judges want to work with an act, then it’s called a four-chair turn. Notable singers who received four-chair turns during past seasons include Tony Lucca, Jesse Campbell, Adriana Louise and The Morgan Twins.

And as of the 21st season’s second night, we can add one more name to that list: Girl Named Tom, a sibling trio that hails from Pettisville, Ohio.

Within seconds of their performance of Crosby, Stills and Nash's "Helplessly Hoping," Clarkson slaps her button and turns around, clearly impressed with the trio’s talent.

“I was first!” Clarkson says.

And even though it takes a bit longer for the other judges to hit their bright red buttons, Shelton, Legend and Grande all seem impressed from the beginning, raising their eyebrows and shaking their heads in disbelief.

As you can imagine, as soon as Girl Named Tom finished their performance, a veritable feeding frenzy began over who would get to mentor this gifted sibling trio.

Clarkson, who stood up to make her case, was the most enthusiastic and animated of the judges. She even stops herself at one point, saying, “Oh, I got too loud.”

“I turned way before everyone else!” Clarkson adds.

But Shelton, who has his own direction he wants to take Girl Named Tom, was quick to make his voice heard and poke a little fun at his co-judge.

“I don’t know why being a spazz with the button is such a great thing,” Shelton jokes. “I was waiting to hear somebody and sing by themselves. At some point, somebody’s going to need to be the one to step out every now and then.”

The other judges also made their cases as to why Girl Named Tom should pick them as a mentor.

Grande, who replaced Nick Jonas for her first season on the show this year, said she was “obsessed” with the trio.

“I loved how tightly knit those harmonies were. My favorite part is vocal production and adding all of these layers. That’s like my dream,” Grande said.

“When you guys started, I was so surprised in the best way. All of the ideas popping into my head. I want you guys to do an Imogen Heap song really badly,” she added.

But Legend, the last to make his case, seemed to say exactly the right things, namedropping a few artists like Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver and also the fact that he, too, is from Ohio.

In the end, however, Clarkson’s enthusiasm seems to have won the trio over. When they announce her name, Clarkson screams with joy, having won over the first four-chair turn.
