The Ultimate Guide To Finding The Perfect Jeans That Fits In All The Right Places For Every Look

Even though you know your jean size to a T, you might not realize that you are still a bit off on your exact sizing. Many of us practically ignore the jean's rise, inseam or fit when we shop online or in-store. This is a recipe for disaster and you are probably guilty of buying several pairs of jeans that just don't look right.

Rise

Since we're all not pushed out of the same mold, jeans were manufactured to include a wide variety of cuts and sizes to fit each and every body type. Whether you gravitate towards high-waisted skinny jeans or ultra baggy lowriders, we'll let you decide if it's ultimately the right cut for you.

Let's begin with the rise. The rise is measured from the center of your crotch seam between your legs, all the way up to the top of your waistband.

It's typically 7 inches to 12 inches in length. Here are the most common types:

  • Original: The waistline on an original cut is placed high enough to reach your belly button. This casual fit is perfect enough to prevent any 'plumber bottom' incidents when you bend down or sit. Original jeans are very easy to pair with flannels, pullovers and sweaters during the coldest of days. During summertime, you can wear light blouses, classic tees and even crop tops without looking gauche.

  • High-Waisted: These jeans have a waistline that is either on the same level of your belly button like the previous rise or placed a few inches higher. This rise is not to be worn tightly and you shouldn't be afraid to size-up if you have to. High-waists became popular in the '80s and early '90s, but they've made a surprising comeback. This rise helps to elongate your body and looks best paired with a tucked-in shirt or crop top. But, many have opted for this cut to give an illusion of a flatter belly while they wear a loose top over it.

  • Regular / Medium: This rise is the most popular among many people worldwide. These jeans have a classic waistline that sits right below the belly button. It's timeless and can be paired with any type of top and jacket.
  •
  • Low: Low-rise jeans are befitting to those with a flat tummy. When you try on these jeans, your waist shouldn't protrude into a muffin top. If it does, then don't worry. You just need to either size-up or choose a different type of rise. This cut is also prone to showing off your lower belly. If that's not your cup of tea, you can always pair it with a longer top or tunic.
  •
  • Ultra-Low: These jeans so extremely lowriding that it could possibly expose your upper pubic region if you dare to wear them. They were only popular during the early 2000s and kinda look cute with oversized sweaters or jerseys. Thus, this sexy style is still acceptably perfect for a night on the town.

Fit

Now we will move on to the fit of the jeans. This typically defines how the jeans look from the hipline to the knees, as well as how tight or loose they are. Here are the basic fits:

  • Slim: This fit is just tight from the waist to above your knees. It starts to loosen from the kneecaps to your shins. The slim fit looks great on all body types, especially when you choose an original or regular rise.
  • Skinny: This fit has become so popular over the years, it's practically a staple in everyone's wardrobe. It's tight from the waistline to the shin and can be easily paired with any top.
  • Jeggings: Jeggings are a cross between leggings and jeans. Since 2010, this style has grown to become a trendy accessory for many teens around the world. It fits snug like a second skin. One caveat, you must avoid any paper-thin jeggings as they will look see-through when you wear them out in public.
  • Boyfriend: These jeans are loose-fitting and are basically the female counterpart of the men's classic look. It's a little longer in length than the other jean types and looks fabulous on everybody.
  • Relaxed: These jeans have a lower waistline and a breathable loose fit throughout the legs. You can wear it with any top and jacket and it's perfect for winter. Although, it's one of the few jeans that are deemed far too casual to wear in the office.
  • Loose: This fit is the baggiest that jeans get can get. The loose fit was made popular by the hip-hop subculture in the 90s. It's still a fun and cute style that many have yet to embrace. This fit is usually worn with sneakers, classic tees and tank tops.

Cut

Finally, the last thing you must look out for when shopping for a new pair of jeans is the cut. There are three different cuts:

  • Straight: This cut has the same width from the knees to the bottom of the jeans. It's ultra casual and can hide any imperfections around your shins. This style can be worn with everything.
  • Boot: The bottoms of boot-cut jeans are slightly flared so you can wear them over your boots. They've been worn since the mid-60s, but the bottoms were super flared during those times. Boot-cuts can help balance the bodies of women with wider hips.
  • Tailored / Tapered: This cut gets narrow from the knees to the bottom of the jeans. They can enhance your legs if they are shapely and look awesome with any type of footwear.
