The Time Prince Harry Was Mistaken For A Salesperson As He Was Purchasing The Sussex Christmas Tree

Dec 22, 2021 by apost team

Christmas is a time for family and sharing special moments together. And of course, a Christmas tree is a must. That's even the case for celebrities and royals. Although, in many cases, they probably have someone who buys the tree for them. However, in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to go and buy their own tree and it proved to be a rather humbling experience for the royal couple.

Since 2020 they've lived in Montecito, California, where they've enjoyed privacy from the glare of the British tabloid press. Although they're still well known and undoubtedly get recognized by people, it seems that they might have achieved some level of anonymity since their move to the US.

The incident from last year is both hilarious and endearing and probably explains one reason the couple loves living Stateside. For Christmas 2020, the pair decided to go shopping themselves and buy their own Christmas tree. They went to a local place but it seemed they still took precautions to maintain privacy and arrived at a time when the Christmas tree lot was very empty.

But unfortunately for them, there was one other family who happened to be there at the same time. It's likely that in the UK, they'd still get recognized, but in the US, things were a little different.

As one worker later wrote on Twitter, Prince Harry was mistaken for a salesperson by the young boy in the family. Funnily enough, we can only imagine that the Sussexes probably enjoyed the anonymity. Let's take a look.

Considering they weren't recognized while shopping for a tree that day, it's likely we would never have known about the incident if it weren't for one of the employees who did actually work at the lot. Twitter user James Almaguer posted about the funny moment to his account soon after it happened.

He explained that the Sussexes planned their shopping trip to the Christmas tree lot very carefully, so as not to arrive when it was too busy with people. Their plan almost worked out except for the other family who was there. Nevertheless, the family must have been busy choosing their own tree and didn't recognize the prince and duchess.

But then, the young boy from the family approached Harry. However, rather than recognize him, the young boy mistook him for a salesperson who worked there! The Twitter user explained the situation. He wrote, as reported by the Daily Mail:

"Meghan and Prince Harry came into my work today and we sold them their Christmas Tree. We had our lot empty when they got there — their agent promoted them a good time to come instead of us shutting it down."

He continued:

"There was one family in there and their stoked little son ran through trees up to Harry and asked if he worked here not knowing who that is."

No doubt Harry was caught by surprise before being relieved by the little boy's mistake. In fact, he probably had a good chuckle at the situation. It even makes for a very good Christmas story, especially when you're a royal and probably one of the most recognizable people on the planet!

Almaguer has since deleted his tweets, but the Daily Mail reported that he described the incident as "anticlimactic, but a very, very interesting experience." He also described the Sussexes very kindly. He said:

"They seem like very nice people honestly. Meghan sounds very kind and Harry sounded and acted like a chill lad honestly. I’m really glad they liked our trees. We got the best we could get. Very appreciative."

It's believed the couple will be spending this Christmas in California once again, this time their first one as a family of four. It's been reported that they were in fact invited to Christmas at Sandringham House along with the other royals, however, a source told Page Six they would not make it. The publication reported:

“There’s a lot that goes into the logistics and the planning of the family Christmas, so of course, staff know that Harry and Meghan are not coming. If they were, they would have communicated it to their family by now."

Since it is the first Christmas without Prince Philip, the source said that it would have been nice for them to join. But considering the pandemic, it's understandable if they cannot make it. The news outlet quoted the source, who said:

“But this is Her Majesty’s first Christmas without her husband, so one would have hoped they would want to be with her.”

Due to the current state of the pandemic in the UK, the Queen canceled the royal family's tradition of spending Christmas in Sandringham mere days ago and will instead stay in Windsor.
