Too often, kids and adults alike look down on janitors. The job is certainly not flashy and we generally consider cleaning up after others at the bottom of the list of desirable jobs. However, in at the Grove Intermediate School in Knoxville, Tennessee, the janitor may have earned some new respect!

Students at the Grove Intermediate School have always liked Maury Forrester with some of them almost considering him a part of their family. What students didn’t realize was that Maury hasn’t always cleaned the school halls; at one point, he was working with NASA to help put men on the moon!

Maury, who is now 77-years-old, explains that he once worked as a electro mechanical designer who helped by putting together crucial launch components for NASA. His dream job was cut short when a stroke made the difficult work impossible.

Maury found himself unable to work for NASA any longer. Not wanting to be stuck at the house all day, Maury chose to take a job as the school janitor. Initially, Maury found the job to be humiliating as he worked to clean up the messes of kids; however, his opinion quickly changed

Now, Maury explains that changing jobs was one of the best decisions that he ever made and he actually considers being a janitor a blessing in disguise. Maury feels like he is a part of a community at the school and he reports feeling a sense of purpose and fulfillment as he works around the kids.

The kids have always loved Maury and those around the school explain that he always wears a smile and has a good attitude no matter what life is throwing his way. How did the students feel when they learned that Maury had once worked for high-names such as NASA, General Electric, and SpaceCo? Honestly, it didn’t seem to elevate their opinion of him at all; instead, they just felt surprised but still view him as the same, loveable man as before.

One student explained that learning about Maury’s past did shock him and made him realize that it’s impossible to know everyone’s story just by face value.

Maury’s story is one that deserves to be passed around and appreciated. This man had to give up a high-paying job to take on one of servanthood; rather than hate his job, he made the best of it and has become a blessing to the children around him. Do you know someone like Maury?
