Lovers of 90s nostalgia can rejoice with the news that The Sandlot is coming back, this time as a TV series. The original film, which was released in 1993, follows a group of young kids in the 60s as they have the summer of their life playing baseball and enjoying the wonders of youth. David Mickey Evans, the original film’s director, announced the series on an episode of The Rain Delay podcast.

In an interview with Today, Evans didn’t reveal much in the way of plot, he did say that the original cast is onboard to return and that the series would take place in 1984.

He added that, "The film was made with the same amount of love that people have for it, and it was the greatest summer of our lives."

The new series will follow the original kids as they enter their early 30s with families and children of their own. While Evans did not say where the show would air, he hinted that it would be “streamed,” possibly indicating Netflix or Hulu. The show was additionally picked up for two seasons.

There has been renewed interest in The Sandlot following the film’s 25th anniversary last year. In a reunion on Today, the whole cast met for the first time in years. Despite the long passage of time, all the cast members still seemed to have a great rapport, which will make seeing them in the series all the more exciting.

Patrick Renna, aka Ham, added:

“Seeing these guys, some of them I haven’t seen in 25 years, but it is just like we’re back.”

Evans added that just like the fictional kids in the film, the summer that they shot The Sandlot was the best summer of their lives, promising to approach the new series with the same vigor.

While a sleeper hit upon its release, The Sandlot has now achieved cult status among an ever-widening audience.

“It’s been crazy. I mean, it definitely gets you in places for free,” Marty York, who played Yeah Yeah, told Today. “I can’t walk through a Las Vegas casino without someone yelling ‘Yeah Yeah!'"

Renna interjects that while more people are interested in the film today, the fanbase is mostly comprised of those who grew up in the 90s, adding that his son was not impressed with the film. Squints actor Chauncey Leopardi agrees, saying his daughter thought that he was a “dork” after watching the movie.
