BenBen, who's dubbed "the saddest cat on the Internet," due to his worried look and down-turned eyes, was just one day from being euthanized when he was rescued back in April 2016.

Vets often get pets by adopting the animals who need them the most. When one ER doctor and her spouse decided to help the injured tabby, they had no idea how sweet the cat truly was.

According to Global News, when BenBen arrived at the shelter, they weren't sure whether he would survive. This sweet tabby cat had suffered greatly at the hands of the cruel world.

BenBen's head injuries were the most noticeable. Deep scratches crossed his face, and blunt force damage had rendered his left ear tattered and lumpy. But worst of all was the fact that BenBen's spine had been crushed. The vets didn't think he would ever walk again.

It was clear that BenBen had been attacked. The shelter vets theorized that some kind of animal must have hurt the sweet kitty, but they weren't able to say for sure.

Predicting His Fate

Everyone who saw BenBen immediately noticed that the cat was miserable. Part of this was caused by the way that BenBen's face sagged on the left side, where he had sustained most of the damage. But there was also something haunting about the sorrow in the cat's eyes.

With debilitating injuries and a slim chance of recovery, BenBen was scheduled to be put down. Shelter staff simply couldn't see a world where this cat was able to live a happy and normal life.

BenBen seemed to understand that he'd been given a death sentence, his humans told Love Meow in an interview. In the days leading up to his final moments, he became even sadder and more dejected than ever before. he stopped eating and drinking, and his eyes filled up with sadness.

Compassion for the Cat

Luckily, one ER worker saw BenBen's will to live. The day before he was scheduled to be put down, BenBen was taken home.

Just as he knew that he was going to die, BenBen realized immediately that he had been rescued. His owner recounts that he was relaxed, purring, and affectionate within an hour after she removed him from the shelter. BenBen might not have known what was coming, but he knew that he'd been given another chance to live.

The Journey to Recovery

Healing can be difficult, but it's a lot easier when you feel safe and loved. Once he made it to his new home, BenBen started recovering from his injuries at a rapid pace.

Part of BenBen's journey included emotional recovery from the attack that he'd suffered. BenBen and his new family bonded instantly, and the cat wasted no time in opening back up to the people around him. But even though he was eager, BenBen had been through a lot, and he needed time to truly relax and feel safe.

The vets predicted that BenBen would never be able to walk again. If he'd been adopted by a normal family, this might have actually been the cat. But because he was adopted by an ER doctor, BenBen had access to the attention, care, and expertise needed to heal from such a traumatic injury.

A Lovely Shade of Green

Today, BenBen is able to walk, run, and even jump across small distances. Regaining his mobility did a lot for his self-confidence; every cat needs the ability to explore their home.

Although the skin on his face still sags, on most days you'll catch BenBen with a relaxed kitty smile. He enjoys sleeping, playing, and looking for treats. He's also incredibly affectionate with the humans who rescued him.

You can tell that BenBen feels better just by looking at him. When he was living under a death sentence, the cat's eyes were swimming pools of darkness and despair. But now that he lives in a happy home, BenBen's eyes have been brought back to life; if you look today, you'll see that they're a lovely shade of green.

Stories like this show why it's important to help every creature fight for their chance at life. BenBen's odds were insurmountable, but he's still here, and the world is a better place because of his presence.
