The Royal Nanny Enforces Strict Rules And A ‘No Nonsense’ Upbringing With George, Charlotte And Louis

Have you ever wondered how Prince William and Kate Middleton are able to attend banquets, meet world leaders, support charities, fulfill other royal duties, and still look after their three children all by themselves? Surprise – they don’t! They’ve got help, and she is the real deal.

It takes a village to raise a child. But what about three children all under the age of 10, and, oh, of royalty? Meet Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo – the powerhouse of a nanny who helps William and his wife Kate out with their three little cherubs: Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4.

The parents of three are fan favorites in the UK and abroad, not only for their family values but also for their charity work. William and Kate act as prominent public figures in the United Kingdom, where they also contribute philanthropically through their official charity fund — when they aren’t taking care of the Cambridge brood or posing for romantic photos, that is.

Aside from Kensington Palace, the royal couple owns other beautiful properties. They have a home in Anmer Hall in Norfolk and in Windsor named Adelaide Cottage. The cottage has a long history since being built in the 1800s, and the royal family continues to bring royal history inside. According to ABC News, William and Kate have relocated to the cottage with their three children.

Still, the family will rely on their royal nanny. Read on to find out what it takes to be a nanny to the Cambridge children, and learn about some of the strict rules she has set for the little royals.

Raising kids is no easy feat, not even for royalty. It’s no surprise that children misbehave every now and then, and sometimes they need a little extra guidance from their caretakers to help lead them back toward the right path, whether it be an extra helping hand from a babysitter or words of encouragement from their parents.

A source told Us Weekly that the Prince and Princess of Wales have a "strict but fair" parenting style but still have a good balance of having fun with their kids. And Dr. Amanda Gummer, a child development expert and psychologist, told Express UK that Kate's parenting style is "powerful." "It’s lovely to see the Duchess demonstrate some really powerful parenting techniques," Dr. Gummer said, adding, "(For example) a focus on playfulness and meeting the children where they are at, getting down to their level and meeting their gaze when talking to them."

According to Marie Claire, the family nanny also enforces a “no nonsense” upbringing when raising George, Charlotte and Louis. The Cambridge family’s nanny, Borrallo, is from Palencia, Spain. HELLO! reported that she was hired by the family when George was 8 months old.

According to The Sun, she was trained in the prestigious nanny school, Norland College. The school was launched in 1892 and has trained over 10,000 nannies who have gone on to work for high-profile families, from royalty to Hollywood celebrities. The Sun added that becoming a Norland nanny takes up to three years at the school, and it can cost about $35,000 to hire one. And you'll get what you pay for.

Author of “Nanny in a Book” and Norland expert Louise Heren told The Sun that with Borrallo, the royal children are in good hands. Bedtime for the young princes and princess would be at 7 pm. Throughout the day, the young ones would have various activities lined up for them, and most of it had to do with playing outdoors.

Heren explained that “getting mucky outside with the kids is a key part of the Norland ethos,” and the Cambridge children go on bike rides, play with the dogs, and even do some gardening. When they are not playing outside, the children would play with puzzles and other educational games. Screen time is limited, but it is ultimately up to William and Kate as to how long they get to play on devices.

The Norland expert shared that George, Charlotte, and Louis will not be picky when it comes to food because “you don’t have a fussy eater if you have a Norland Nanny” from birth. Norland also practices introducing new food and flavors to their employers’ children regularly.

Borrallo is sometimes seen in photos with the kids, and perhaps one thing that makes her stand out from regular nannies is her attire. The Sun reported that the Norland uniform, which costs about $1,300, consists of white gloves (brown in the winter), brown brogues, and a little brown bowler hat. They have to keep their fingernails short, and their hair has to be tied in a bun and kept neatly away from the face.

When it comes to royal engagements, Borrallo preps the kids beforehand, so they are aware of the situation and what is expected of them. Heren said that Borrallo will ensure that the children are “fully alert and ready to go with smiles.”

"She’ll say: ‘This is your opportunity to show Mummy and Daddy just how wonderful you are, and you are to smile and be really good for them and then we can go inside and play,’” Heren wrote.

The expert described Borrallo’s relationship with the family to be more of a “partnership rather than member of staff." It is also assumed that she gets along well with Kate.

Besides regular nanny skills, Borrallo speaks six languages, including her native Spanish, which Town & Country reported she had been teaching to George, who already knew the basics. And according to PEOPLE, Borrallo also helped young Charlotte learn the language! The tiny tot also attended Willcock Nursery School as the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge “thought it would be an ideal first step for Charlotte’s education.”

As per their education at Norland, Borrallo also knows self-defense and skid pan training. “It’s about enhancing driving confidence when you have someone else’s precious children in the car, it’s not about evading terrorists,” Heren explained.

Overall, Heren says having a Norland nanny will enhance a family’s life. The expert shared that Borrallo keeps the children's days filled with fun activities that they will run to William and Kate when they come home and say, “guess what I’ve done today, I don’t care if you've met some world dignitary, listen to what I’ve done.”

“The paparazzi won’t catch Catherine looking distracted because she doesn’t need to be,” the expert added. “She doesn’t need to be thinking about the welfare of their children because they are perfectly safe and looked after.”
