The Rock Sings 'You're Welcome' With Daughter Who Has 'No Idea' He's Maui From Moana

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, known for his role as Maui in the animated feature Moana, sang the film’s signature song You’re Welcome to his two-year-old daughter Tiana on Instagram on Thursday. But even though this isn’t the first time Johnson has sung along with his own part from the Disney film, his daughter still doesn’t realize that her dad is Maui.

The Instagram post shows Johnson sitting at home with his daughter in his lap as he sings along with Maui for what he say is “the 937th time” that day. In the video’s caption he writes, “And for the 937th time today she wants daddy to sing along with Maui. She has no idea, we’re the same person. And I have no idea what day it is anymore, but I am sure it’s one that ends with Y.”

Johnson went on to commiserate with other parents who are homebound with their kids 24/7 due to self quarantine measures, telling fellow parents that they should try to anytime they get the chance. Because as Johnson knows, parents stuck at home are on call 24/7. And for those of us who follow Johnson on Instagram, we know that this isn’t the only day that Tiana has asked her dad to sing along with Maui. In a post earlier this month, Johnson used the rap portion of the song to teach his youngest daughter how to properly wash her hands.

“Before my showers now, Baby Tia (mama mia) demands I sing the rap portion of my song You’re Welcome’ from MOANA, while I wash her hands,” he wrote in the post. “We realized a few weeks ago that the rap portion of the song is perfect timing when getting your little ones to have fun washing their hands.”

For the uninitiated, Moana follows the story of a character of the same name, a princess who has to save her home and people with the help of The Rock’s character, the demigod Maui, according to Teen Vogue. The 2016 animated film is uniquely set in the South Pacific, but like most Disney movies, it has its fair share of sing-alongs. In 2017, before his daughter Tiana was even born, The Rock also revealed that his portrayal of Maui was partly based on his grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia of Samoa, according to Teen Vogue.

Both The Rock’s grandfather — whose body art was related to his status as a Samoan chief —  and Maui have tribal body tattoos, for example. Seen side by side, the resemblance is even more striking. With that said, Tiana’s fascination with Maui — even if she hasn’t yet connected the dots — makes some sense. Not only is it her dad singing, but the character on screen also represents Tiana’s late great grandfather.
