Peter Phillips and his wife Autumn have announced that they are going to divorce and share custody of their two children.

It has been confirmed that the Queen's grandson, Peter Phillips, and his wife Autumn are separated. As The Telegraph reported, a statement was issued on their behalf: the couple said their decision to divorce was "the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship."

The same statement also revealed that they are going to be sharing custody of their two children Savannah (9), and Isla (7).

The couple first told the Queen and other royal family members about their decision just last year. According to The Telegraph, the statement stated both sides of their families were "sad" but still "fully supportive" of the couple's co-parenting decision.

Peter Phillips, 42, is the eldest grandchild of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and is the son of Royal Princess Anne and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips.

In 2008, Phillips married the Canadian Autumn Kelly, 41, at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. They raised their children in Gloucestershire.

Although Mr. Phillips is indeed a member of the royal family, he does not have a royal title because he is from the matrilineal line of the family. He also is not a working royal and refused the offer of an earldom when he married and therefore, his children do not have courtesy titles.

"Peter and Autumn have requested privacy and compassion for their children while the family continues to adapt to these changes," according to the statement. It also added that "the decision to divorce and share custody came about after many months of discussions and although sad, is an amicable one."
