The Queen ‘Desperately Missed’ Prince Philip And May Have Passed From A Broken Heart

Sep 16, 2022 by apost team

On Apr. 9, 2021, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, passed away at the age of 99. Not long before his death, Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved husband was discharged from the hospital after spending several days there due to complications with an infection.

Philip's passing ended his reign as the longest-serving royal spouse, having served alongside Elizabeth for 65 years and having been married to the late monarch for 73 years in total.

In Philip's honor, a funeral took place on Apr. 17, 2021; however, it had a limited number of guests due to the coronavirus restrictions that were in place at the time. The grief of his passing was felt deeply in the United Kingdom, but his family also shared the happier times spent with him.

Following his death, a significant number of tributes and condolences poured in. His singular and incredible life has continued to be remembered and celebrated by his family. While Philip had a large number of achievements and accolades to his name, nothing will ever surpass the fact that he was the love of Elizabeth's life and that he was the most devoted consort to the queen. The Duke of Edinburgh was an active and dedicated member of the royal family ever since Queen Elizabeth's crowning.

Over one year after Philip's death in 2021, Elizabeth herself passed away on Sept. 8, 2022. It was a devastating day for the royal family as many members gathered to be by her side in her final moments. Some say she even died of a broken heart. However, Elizabeth will be buried alongside her husband after Philip is moved from where he was initially buried following his death in 2021.

According to Biography.com, Philip met his future wife, Elizabeth, for the first time in 1934, when both families attended the marriage of his cousin to Elizabeth's uncle and met once again when Elizabeth's father, King George VI, was crowned. They began their relationship when Elizabeth was still a teenager, and their relationship continued to become stronger through the years. In 1946, Prince Philip asked Elizabeth to marry him.

In an oft-quoted speech on the date of Elizabeth and Philip’s 50th wedding anniversary in 1997, the late queen called her husband her “strength" and reiterated the same thoughts in her own photo tribute to her late husband, which was posted to the official royal Instagram account.

The caption read, "... he has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know."

At the time of Philip’s death, Express reported that the royal family arranged for the funeral to be held at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, where Philip's coffin was also expected to remain until the day the queen died, after which the Duke of Edinburgh would be buried alongside his wife of 73 years.

Now that Elizabeth has passed, official arrangements are underway to ensure they are buried together. However, first, the queen's body is expected to lie in state at Westminster Hall so that members of the public can pay their respects. Following that, she will be buried at the King George VI memorial chapel, which is the resting place of her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret. Philip will be interred to join Elizabeth at the memorial chapel.

This will be a final and poignant tribute to Elizabeth and Philip and their incredible, enduring love as loyal companions for over seven decades.

Many people have brought up the idea that Elizabeth potentially died of a broken heart, having to be without her late husband for so long. According to ABC.Net, this isn’t a completely outlandish idea, as research has shown that a person’s risk of dying increases in the first 30 days following a loved one’s death. Australian heart surgeon Nikki Stamp said it has a lot to do with stress:

“What we know is that for some people the stress of losing a loved one, or any kind of stressful event in your life, does precipitate a whole bunch of reactions in the physical body as well as in your mind that can cause disease and sometimes cause someone to pass away.”

According to Express, Dr. Deb Cohen-Jones said that “broken heart syndrome” could have played a role in the queen’s death. “From a physiological point of view, the loss of Prince Philip would have caused her severe stress, peaking her cortisol levels, and leaving her body to deal with that,” she said.

Paul Burrell, the queen’s ex-footman, spoke about her grief. “She sorely, desperately missed him and he’s waiting for her in St. George’s chapel in Windsor and she will be beside him very soon,” he said.

However, this is no concrete evidence that this was the actual cause of Elizabeth’s death. There has also not been an official announcement of the cause behind the queen’s death. While the queen surely experienced a great amount of grief following Philip’s passing, she is now reunited with her loved one.
