The New Crossing Guard Wins Parents' Trust By Giving The Kids More Than Just Safety

School crossing guards are often overlooked when it comes to the safety of our children. They work in all weather conditions to ensure our kids are making it across the roadway safely every day. With so many vehicle accidents happening today, crossing guards are essential to have. However, many people don’t realise just how much they come to love the children they watch over every single day on the job.
Patty Polley is one school crossing guard who began working at Dale R. Fair Banson Park Elementary a few years ago. She was hired after applying with the county sheriff’s office. Her hope at the time was to earn a little bit of extra cash, but she ended up all over social media a few years later. The news of how she took care of the children in her care definitely brought tears to many people.
No matter what the weather was like, Polly was out in it-helping kids who were on their way to school. She soon realized as she stood with her stop sign and neon safety gear, that something was definitely amiss.

She had become quite attached to her young charges at that point. She was so upset about the problem that she wasn’t able to ignore it any longer, according to WFTS.
She talked about falling in love with all of her students and missing them when summer vacation comes. She even said it doesn’t feel like an actual job to her.
Even though it was Florida, temperatures had dropped during the winter. Patty realized that many of the kids walking by her on cold mornings and afternoons were not adequately dressed for the winter months.
She also realized that it wasn’t just a matter of the kids forgetting their gloves or hats now and again. She came to the realization that many of them simply did not own any.
Patty decided that she was going to fix this problem once and for all. She went home and began to knit mittens for the kids. Her sister, who lives in Maine, helped out by donating gloves to her cause, as well.
Many families were extremely grateful for Patty and her sister. They could not believe how caring the two were. To show just how pleased they were, some of the parents reached out to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, where Patty had applied for her crossing guard job. They were eager to tell her bosses just how amazing they thought she was. They were also anxious to tell everyone on social media the same!
Patty was shocked at the responses that poured in. Many people sent her gifts, while the office rewarded her and called her their “unsung hero.”
Patty responded by saying how amazing the whole thing is. She stated that the kids have actually given her much more than she could have given them.
The children who walk past her on their way to school absolutely adore her. They were excited to express their own thoughts and opinions on “Ms. Patty.”
