Anuradha Koirala is a 70-year-old woman from Nepal whose efforts have helped to rescue and protect thousands of women and children from sex trafficking. Her heroic efforts have led to her being dubbed “Nepal’s Mother Teresa.”

Anuradha’s interest in helping traumatized women and children began in the nineties when she began speaking with the many women she would encounter begging each day. Many of their stories involved being victims of physical and sexual abuse, and this touched her because of her own experiences in an abusive marriage.

She made the decision to end her 20-year career as a teacher and do all she could to help improve the lives of abused women. She initially began working with eight women who she educated so they could do something other than beg each day. This work led her to start an organization dedicated to combating sex trafficking in Nepal and neighboring India.

Because of the high numbers of uneducated people living in poverty in Nepal, sex traffickers are able to trick families into sending young women away to India to work and earn money. What these families do not realize, however, is that their beloved wives and daughters will be working as slaves in the illicit sex industry. It is estimated that there are more than 30,000 women and girls being trafficked for sex in the countries of India and Nepal every year, and these numbers are continuing to climb.

In an effort to rescue sex slaves, Anuradha Koirala has worked with authorities to set up rescue operations. She has also established 11 homes where those who are able to escape can live. Anuradha even started a restaurant that employs former sex slaves as they work towards a new life. Her amazing work also includes homes for AIDS patients, a school, and a home for young girls designed to prevent them from becoming ensnared in the sex trade.

Anuradha’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, and even though she is in her seventies, she shows no sign of slowing down.
