On Being A Star

According to Today, Parton grew up in Tennessee in a one-room cabin with 12 other siblings. But presently, Parton is worth $500 millioin. However, it seems her humble upbringing still stuck with her throughout her stardom and her sense of humor. She explained why she doesn't think of herself as a star to Billboard.

"I never think of myself as a star because, as somebody once said, 'A star is nothing but a big ball of gas' -- and I don't want to be that,"

Have A Life

Parton has one of the most recognizable faces in the U.S. and its all thanks to the hard work the singer puts in. Between running her own theme park and performing, the 74-year-old hasn't forgotten to make time for the people who count. As per Today, Dolly said:

“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life."

Getting Through Difficult Times

Dolly Parton shared her wisdom on how she has gotten through difficult situations in her life. The iconic legend believes you have to put up with a little of the bad times to have good times:

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain."

On Sharing The Stage

Parton actually wrote the hit song "I Will Always Love You" and first recorded it 20 years before Whitney Houston famously voiced it. Parton said she didn't know Houston had even performed the song until she heard on the radio one day. Although the song will go down in history with Whitney Houston getting all the credit, it doesn't seem to bother Dolly.

Parton told Katie Couric in 2016, "Well, a lot of people say that's Whitney's song, and I always say, 'That's fine, she can have the credit, I just want my cash."

Always Wearing Makeup

Dolly Parton hasn't beat around the bush when it comes to her makeup. She even went as far to come up with a drastic situation in which she could potentially be caught without makeup on. She told The Independent in 2002, "Not unless Carl (my husband) was dead. Maybe if I had to get him to the hospital in the middle of the night, but I'm not even sure about that – I might make him hang on so I could at least get a little lipstick on."

"But seriously though, when I'm in California, they're so prone to earthquakes you never know when you're going to have to run out in the street, so usually I'll sleep with my make-up on – well, at least my eye make-up. I wouldn't go out without it – I'd rather be dead."

She Loves Everyone

Parton has remained a supporter of LGBTQ initiatives and has supported other artists who come from different backgrounds and works than she has. According to Vogue, Parton told the late artist Andy Warhol and actress Maura Moynihan:

"I love everybody, and I go right through the bullsh*t to the core of every person because we are all one... The biggest freaks in the world are my favorite people, like you, like me,"

On Her Humor

Although Dolly Parton is known for a lot of things, probably one of the best is her sense of humor. Her folksy charm and souther twang has lead the way for Parton's famous lines to be known as "Dollyisms." She told Roger Ebert in 1980:

"I know some of the best Dolly Parton jokes, I made 'em up myself!"

On Not Having Children

Parton and her husband Carl Dean married in 1966, however, they never had their own children. Parton was also busy taking care of her siblings growing up. She told TODAY why she believes she wasn't meant to have children of her own:

"I think it probably was his plan for me not to have kids so everybody's kids could be mine. And they are now," she said.

Making Sure Her Music Lives On

Parton said on her podcast about her music living on even after she passes:

“There’s enough stuff to go on forever with my music, to do compilation albums, to do new and original stuff. I am purposely trying to put songs down for that very purpose, to have a click track and my vocals where any arrangement could be done.”
